Sixth Grader Builds iPhone Apps and Sparks Learning in School

Thomas Suarez is a sixth grade student at a middle school in the South Bay of Los Angeles who has been fascinated by computers and technology since before kindergarten. With the introduction of software development tools, he started building applications for the iPhone and iPad.

“A lot of kids these days want to play games, but now they want to make them. And it’s difficult because not many kids know where to go to find out how to make a program,” said Suarez on October 22 at the TEDxManhattanBeach Transforming Learning Conference. “For soccer you can go to a soccer team, for violin you could get lessons for violin. But what if you want to make an app? Their parents might have done a lot of those things when they were young but not many parents have written apps.”

I’ve heard legal theories that the city of New York has the right to impose restrictions on the time, place and manner of the exercise of free speech. This will obviously play out in a court of law. I don’t know how anyone can reasonably look at the laws and say that the wholesale shutdown of the press, not only from the ground but from the air, is in any way a legal exercise.

Today’s biggest news story — the city’s crackdown on “Occupy” protesters occupying Zuccotti Park — got some of its legs from inside United Federation of Teachers headquarters.

The UFT has been hosting support for the protesters for some time in its Lower Manhattan offices, just blocks from epicenter of the Occupy Wall Street movement. That won’t stop, according to UFT President Michael Mulgrew.

Here’s what Mulgrew said in a statement just now:

And so it begins: with the mid-term elections out of the way, the war over education reform commences in Trenton. I hope those of you who follow me from other places around the country forgive me over the next few weeks for becoming so Jersey-centric.

But understand that this battle does have national implications, much as the Wisconsin protests or the sleaze in Illinois did. Chris Christie is a darling of the right; they practically begged him to run in the primary. And he has staked all of his reputation on his ongoing war with the NJEA. What happens here will certainly ripple across the nation.

On November 10 officials from several cities nationwide held a conference week to compare notes on their respective Occupy protests, but a spokesperson for Portland's mayor insists there's no conspiracy to end the movement. The existence of the call was revealed by Oakland City Mayor Jean Quan, who told the BBC on Tuesday (around the 5:30 mark), "I was recently on a conference call with 18 cities across the country who had the same situation where what had started as a political movement and a political encampment ended up being an encampment no longer in control by the people who started them."

Quan's quote immediately sparked speculation that the city mayors had been colluding on the recent wave of crackdowns nationwide. In the five days since that phone call, police have either raided the Occupy camps or ordered them to be moved in New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Portland and San Francisco. The state and a nonprofit venture capital fund are teaming up to offer the largest pot of money ever in Florida to increased the number of high-performing charter schools.

The $30 million fund will help to start 30 charter schools over five years. The schools will serve about 15,000 students in the state.

Florida’s education department is putting up $20 million and the Florida Charter School Growth Fund is kicking in another $10 million.

The awards will go to schools organizations that already operate high-performing charter schools in

“I love my job,” Secretary Duncan said at the close of yesterday’s second #AskArne Twitter Town Hall, moderated by education journalist John Merrow.

Merrow covered a wide-range of education topics including teacher pay, early learning, and how to get more young people excited about teaching. Here are several of the topics Arne addressed:

Respecting Teachers:

Merrow pointed to a couple of Twitter questions about respecting teachers, and asked Arne if he believes that teachers have been subject to “teacher bashing.” Duncan agreed:

@usedgov: Arne: “No question” teacher bashing is happening. We need to elevate, not demean, the profession. #askarne

“Whether it’s teachers or the teaching profession,” Duncan explained, “we’re trying to do everything we can to elevate it, to strengthen it. To make sure we celebrate excellence, and to make sure that collective bargaining rights are maintained.

Charter Schools:

@tbfurman: Has the charter school movement begun to “police itself” – as you asked them to do last July? #AskArne

Arne replied:

@usedgov: Arne on charters: I see bad charters being phased out & closed down. There’s more work to be done. #AskArne

@usedgov: Arne: Need a high bar for charter schools. The chance to educate children is a sacred obligation. #AskArne

Later the topic of charters reemerged and Duncan explained:

@usedgov: Duncan: Where charter schools are high-performing, we want to support them. Where they aren’t, they’re part of the problem. #AskArne

Choice:

@SteveGrose: Mich lawmakers are on a path to increase school choice without requiring improved quality. Is choice a reform model? #askarne

Arne explained:

@usedgov: Arne: For choice to work, it has to be choices between quality. #AskArne

@usedgov: Arne: It’s really important to empower parents. If parents are not empowered, I’d have a problem with that. #AskArne

Testing:

@usedgov: Re: testing, we need to be evaluating students’ knowledge, but drilling on fill-in-bubble tests isn’t best way to do that #AskArne

Student Loan Debt:

@EDSuccess: #AskArne what policies are @usedgov considering to address student loan debt at public and non-profit schools?

Duncan replied:

Early Education:
