    Scott Olsen was shot in the face by an Oakland cop during an attack on protesters taking part in Occupy Oakland.
    Olsen is the Iraq war veteran who suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a projectile fired by police during the Occupy Oakland protests, will require surgery to alleviate brain swelling.

    Now that the mandate to run our nation's schools according to No Child Left Behind has utterly collapsed, and many of the best minds are suggesting that we move on, there is still a prevailing contingency seeking to not just prop up but expand many of the tenants of the failed policy.

    Our political leadership in Washington DC continues to be obsessed with the intricacies of the accountability measures imposed by NCLB. Rich people continue to exhort educators to adopt business practices which are in great part what helped bring about NCLB. And state after state across the country continues to divert precious dollars from early childhood education, art and music teachers, and foreign language and advanced placement programs to teacher incentive and evaluation systems mandated by NCLB.

    The Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee passed a school voucher bill that could go to the state Senate for a vote as early as today. Beginning in April of this year, I wrote a series of articles about the use of school vouchers as a strategy for dismantling public education, and the role of the Betsy DeVos-led organization American Federation for Children in this well-funded political effort. Talk2action co-founder Bruce Wilson and I produced a video documenting the teaching of creationism and attacks on Catholicism in the textbook series used by private schools already receiving corporate tax credit funding (EITC) in Pennsylvania. If the controversial SB-1 passes, the public funding to private and parochial schools, including those in the video, will be dramatically increased. SB-1 would initiate a voucher program and expand EITC from $75 million to $125 million over the next three years.
