Parents Across America Seattle respectfully asks PTA delegates to vote NO on charter schools at the Washington State PTA legislative assembly on October 14th and 15th. We are concerned because:

* Charter schools are run by private interests, including for-profit corporations. They are accountable to those corporations, not to parents or students.

* Charter schools do not solve the opportunity gap. They have a mixed record compared to traditional public schools - according to the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO), a full 83% of
charter schools do worse, or only as well as, regular public schools.

* In an effort to inflate standardized test scores, charter schools exclude some English Language Learners and

Check out this letter sent Wednesday to NY State Education Commissioner King, from the UFT, Class Size Matters, NAACP & AQE, pointing out the numerous legal flaws as regards this year’s Contracts for Excellence (C4E) process.

The state and the city have together shut out parents and the public from any meaningful involvement in the formulation and implementation of the city’s overall C4E and class size reduction plan, contrary to law. As the letter points out, the following are among the violations of law that have occurred this year:

· The state asked to pre-approve the city’s proposed plan, before the public had a chance to see it or comment;

· The city has failed to schedule borough hearings;

The California Budget project found that California is near the bottom in the country, at No. 46, in terms of per-student spending. And in the last school year state spending was $2,856 less per student than the rest of the country.

California isn’t ranking well when it comes to spending money on K-12 education, according to an analysis.

The nonpartisan California Budget Project found that California is near the bottom in the country, at No. 46, in terms of per-student spending. And in the last school year state spending was $2,856 less per student than the rest of the country. In 2002, that amount was only $691.

California also ranked No. 50 for student-to-teacher ratio and No. 47 for education spending as part of the state’s economy, according to the report.

The purpose of this guide is to provide an instructional resource for California schools, from kindergarten through grade twelve, to implement effective, standards-based nutrition education programs for students. The guide was designed to (1) meet the Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (California Department of Education 2008) in the Nutrition and Physical Activity content area; and (2) address the nutrition competencies.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke to hundreds of Oregon teachers union members at H.B. Lee Middle School the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 12.

It’s time to leave behind No Child Left Behind.

That was just one message Arne Duncan, U.S. secretary of education, got at a town hall meeting with members of the Oregon Education Association the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 12, at H.B. Lee Middle School, 1121 N.E. 172nd Ave.

Duncan also heard criticism of President Obama’s support for public charter schools, which one critic claimed takes away tax dollars needed for traditional neighborhood public schools. Another critic knocked the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for taking tax dollars away from education and other services.

In honor of the one-year anniversary of Modern School, I am reposting some of my favorite articles from the past year. The following was the first in a series I wrote about the growing lock down madness occurring in LA, Oakland and other urban districts throughout California. Certainly student safety should be of the highest concern for educators. On the other hand, the strategy of locking students in their classrooms without food, water or access to bathrooms, sometimes for hours at a time, and often as an unnecessary precaution, is just plain madness. I think there are alternatives that would still protect kids, while preserving their civil liberties and dignity. (And what about doing something about the socioeconomic factors that lead to so much violence in our communities?)

One year ago today I started All Things Education. Happy Blogiversary to me! Unfortunately, so far I have spent my blogiversary at a dentist's appointment (but no cavities :) and reading depressing tweets from Rupert Murdoch's big speech about education racketeering, I mean, reform. So now it's time for some reflection.

I'd always enjoyed writing, but I started writing more seriously during my last year of college. For my senior project, I translated a series of short stories from French to English and that hooked me. After graduating, I continued writing, but then fell in love with teaching which I did for about ten years before deciding to take a break to spend more time with my children and more time writing. I took several writing workshops and got some of my creative work published. If you're interested, you can find links to them on my other blog, which I initially started to share my writing and get some feedback. I started writing more and more about education and decided to dedicate an entire blog to it. Then, I started tweeting. . .

This time last year, I had maybe 1,000 hits on my (other) blog which was a couple of years old. My education
