      SAN FRANCISCO -- Activists with the Occupy movement joined forces with teachers union members outside a San Francisco hotel Thursday to protest an education conference promoting charter schools, teacher pay for performance and more digital instruction in schools.

      Big names in the country's conservative education reform movement were featured at the two-day conference, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and media baron Rupert Murdoch.

      Sponsored by the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a nonprofit headed by Bush, the summit focused on seniority-based teacher compensation and the

      Emily Sirota will likely be the only Denver school board candidate this year to draw an endorsement from a man whose name has been floated as a 2016 presidential contender.

      Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer was in Denver on Thursday for a Sirota fundraiser at a pizzeria. Her campaign suggested guests make contributions ranging from $75 to $200 to help fuel the home stretch of Sirota’s race against Anne Rowe for the District 1 seat representing southeast Denver.

      Schweitzer, who also met earlier in the day with Gov. John Hickenlooper, admitted after his remarks to a packed

      Charlotte Ciancio, superintendent of the Mapleton schools, has been named 2012 Colorado superintendent of the year by the Colorado Association of School Executives.

      Ciancio has led conversion of the districts neighborhood schools into small, specialized schools and worked to obtain voter approval and state aid to upgrade aging district facilities.

      She will be Colorado’s candidate for national superintendent of the year, who will be announced at the February 2012 conference of the American Association of School Administrators.

      Gerald Keefe, superintendent of the 109-student Kit Carson school district, has been appointed a county judge by Gov. John Hickenlooper. (County judges aren’t required to be lawyers.)

      Although his district is small, Keefe is well known in education circles for service on boards and study panels,
