POINT LOMA — The founding principal of Explorer Elementary Charter School spent thousands of dollars on business meals, wine and dog treats over the last two years, expenses on her credit card that were covered by taxpayers.

The Watchdog obtained two years of statements and expense reports under the California Public Records Act for former Principal Jill Green, who resigned April 27.

Green, who earned $110,277 annually, said concerns over her expenses were raised by the charter’s governing board

So much to catch up on-- it's never going to happen. My recent encounter with a spider has left me with a ridiculous injury that I'm tempted to memorialize with photography. I'll spare you.

I missed the Chicago SOS event down at Hull House; I'll keep my eye on Small Talk for details about what went on.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I see that Democracy Now did an excellent recap of the current madness in public ed policy. Diane Ravitch did another great job of debunking Arne Duncan's unrelenting bullshit. So did NYC teacher Brian Jones, whom I've never met. If you didn't see it, here it is:

While waiting for my car alarm to be fixed, my hubby and I walked over to the Old Country Buffet for breakfast. While we were enjoying our meal, I people watched. When I yelled, “Ewww!”, my husband looked up, wondering if I had ingested something other than food. However, my loud comment did not stem from my food, it was from the view of a woman’s buttocks as she rose from her seat. Not just the crack, but the whole top of her butt! Why did I have to see that? Why wasn’t she wearing a belt? Yuck!

It brought to mind, how over the past few years, the words “Pull up your pants” (male and female), or “pull up your shirt” (females) have been spoken by me, repeatedly, to the students in my class. The sad part is, I teach 10 -12 year olds.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is navigating the process of selecting a new superintendent.

According to recent reports by the Advocate, a "strategic subcommittee" has been formed which conspicuously includes: Michael Tipton, a TFA executive director; Chris Meyer, former TFAer and DOE special adviser to former state Superintendent Paul Pastorek; and Kimberly Williams, legal director of the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools (the exec. director of LAPC is Caroline Shirley Roemer, sister of BESE member Charles Roemer). Not only is there conflict of interests here, but community input and control of their public schools is, once again, being subverted by these special interests with a very focused agenda to privatize our public schools.

Many retailers and schools are advocating waste-free options for back-to-school shoppers this year, especially when it comes to lunch. School lists call for Tupperware instead of Ziplocs, neoprene lunch bags instead of brown paper ones, and aluminum water bottles, not the throwaway plastic versions.
