Pro-union protesters to target Rhee

Parents, teachers and students are coming to Washington on Monday to protest anti-union initiatives favored by former D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

The protest will focus its attention on the American Federation for Children's annual policy conference at the Washington Marriott, which Rhee, Walker and Corbett are scheduled to attend.

AFC backs initiatives by Walker and Corbett designed to reduce the hold of unions on the education systems and bureaucracies of their respective states.

Rhee repeatedly squared off against teachers unions as she pushed for reforms that held teachers accountable for student progress. Some of the results of her approach have been disputed following a recent USA Today article strongly suggesting that answers on student tests had been modified to

As you know, Mayor Bloomberg has announced his plans to reduce the teaching force by 12%. Many people are saying, oh, this means higher class sizes, and will thus be a disaster. Others are saying it's incredibly stupid to cut teachers while sitting on what is now a 3.2 billion dollar surplus.

We at Educators4NYC Educator choose not to wallow in negativity, but rather to seek new reforms. For example, Mayor Bloomberg will be saving over 300 million by laying off thousands of teachers. We see this as an opportunity for innovation. NYC is a city of innovation. For example, we're now not only using value-added methods, but fighting to make the results public, despite the fact that the actual results can be worse than meaningless.

We've also created a merit pay program that failed to substantively improve anything. We've devoted a lot of time and money to this plan, and

The wisdom of the elites
"The fact is that what we’re experiencing right now is a top-down disaster. The policies that got us into this mess weren’t responses to public demand. They were, with few exceptions, policies championed by small groups of influential people — in many cases, the same people now lecturing the rest of us on the need to get serious. And by trying to shift the blame to the general populace, elites are ducking some much-needed reflection on their own catastrophic mistakes." -- Paul Krugman, NYT
Freedom riders
Nancy Flanagan responds to Duncan
"It's time to remember the Freedom Riders, who risked their very lives fifty years ago this week, to achieve democratic equality. Notsegregated charter schools which a handful of lottery-winners get to attend. Not classrooms staffed by two-year adventure teachers . Not watered-down, low-level curriculum and test items.' -- Edweek
Punishing L.A. high schools for low scores

Daily Kos: does Dionne have it right?

Daily Kos: does Dionne have it right?

does Dionne have it right?

Let me begin with the ending:

It’s axiomatic that government isn’t perfect and that we’re better off having a large private sector. It ought to be axiomatic that the private market isn’t perfect, either, and that we need government to step in when the market fails. The success of the auto bailout and the failure of the Republicans’ anti-Medicare campaign both teach the same lesson: The era of anti-government extremism is ending.

That is the conclusion of a Washington Post op ed by E. J. Dionne titled Rescuing Detroit: No news about government’s good news. Dionne calls Republicans to account, reminding us how critical they were of the administration's decision to bail out the auto industry.

If you prefer, we could begin with his very brief opening paragraph:

Don’t expect to see a lot of newspapers and Web sites with this headline: “Big Government Bailou

Our Schools Coalition has not been active since September of 2010 after congratulating themselves on being a part of the bargaining process between the teacher’s union and the superintendent.

The coalition formed here strongly supports the following changes to the Seattle Public School teacher contract, to be renegotiated beginning April 2010 for agreement by the start of the 2010-2011 school year. We advocate that all

Talking about School Reform and Feeling Depressed

A few weeks ago, I was invited to speak to a group of Stanford University graduate students who were completing a joint Masters’ degree in education and business administration.

Many of the 18 students sitting around a seminar table had taught a few years in urban schools through Teach for America. Those who had no direct experience in schools had worked for consulting firms with contracts in major urban districts. Smart, savvy about organizations and passionate about reforming schools, the students wanted to hear my thoughts about reform that I had extracted from nearly a half-century of experience as teacher, superintendent, and researcher. I offered four lessons. Since I have written about each of these lessons in earlier posts I will compress the lessons and cite the earlier posts for those readers who want more
