We are, as usual, having the wrong conversation.
In the days since Gov. Rick Snyder unveiled his hope for a 21st-Century education for Michigan children, we're not talking about the children.
We're talking about the past.
State Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer is an astute, caring leader. She doesn't see that the sky is falling on our children.
"To be clear," Whitmer, D-East Lansing, said in opposing cuts in the education budget, "before (Gov. Rick) Snyder proposed taking $895 million out of the School Aid Fund, there was no school funding crisis in Michigan. In fact, there was a surplus, making what we are now faced with a crisis of choice -- not of necessity."

Today was the Tribune forum on education, held in the Oakland Public Library’s beautiful new branch on 81st Avenue. I’ll admit, I was unsure about how the day would shape up, or how the discussion on charter schools would go. Kate Middleton, if/when she is crowned queen of England, would be the first ever with a college degree. But the queen with the broadest education and deepest intellect was probably the brilliant Queen Elizabeth 1, who was learning Latin at age 5.

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, who is marrying Prince William on Friday, could become queen of England if William is crowned king.

Middleton attended exclusive private schools. For primary (elementary) grades, she attended until she was 13 years old St. Andrew School in the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. Founded in 1934, it is located in a Victorian mansion on 54 acres of playing fields, lawns and woods.

Compared to most states, California is performing abysmally when it comes to schools making "adequate yearly progress" as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind law.

According to a new report from the Center on Education Policy, 61 percent of California schools failed to makeadequate yearly progress in raising test scores as required by the federal No Child Left Behind law. By comparison, a mere 5 percent of schools in Texas failed to do so.

Amid ongoing debate in Washington about corporate tax reform, some of the largest companies in California are paying well below the required income tax.

Of the largest 25 companies in the state, measured by revenue, roughly half reported they paid close to the full tab or more for last year. But more than a third reported a tax rate of less than 25 percent – well below the required 35 percent U.S. income tax rate for corporations. (For a full list, see below.)

The New York Post is engaged in yet another series of articles on the perfidy of teachers. This series basically tells the world that teachers have too many job protections. It does this by giving examples of teachers who have jobs despite the fact that, for example, a dog the teacher owned killed someone. This teacher's boyfriend went to prison for this, but the teacher herself did not. This suggests to me the state felt her boyfriend responsible, but the Post is not persuaded. None of this innocent until proven guilty nonsense for Rupert Murdoch.
