Wisconsin’s Democratic Senators have skipped work today in boycott of a bill that threatens to dismantle the state’s 50-year-old collective bargaining process for public employee unions. The proposal, by new Republican Governor Scott Walker, has brought tens of thousands of students, government workers and citizens to swarm the capital building for the third consecutive day of protests.

During an interview with TMJ4 of Milwaukee that aired Thursday, President Obama weighed in on the rapidly escalating brouhaha over Gov. Scott Walker's (R-Wis.) proposal to strip public-sector employees of collective-bargaining rights.

Obama said that while some measures, such as pay freezes for those employees, are "the right thing to do" to combat budget shortfalls, "some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally, seems like an assault on unions." Gov. Scott Walker announced a "budget-repair bill" that would end nearly all collective bargaining rights for most of the state's public employees, as well as usher in changes to undermine union support. Walker also proposed increasing public employees' contributions to their pensions and health insurance. The weather in Wisconsin is cold this time of year -- but the budget fight is only getting hotter. Following a walkout by the state Senate Democrats, depriving Republicans of the three-fifths majority needed to pass the budget and its controversial anti-public union provisions, theNBC affiliate in Madison now reports that sources say the Dems have left the state entirely.

This comes after the state Senate majority leader said that the State Patrol could be called in to round up the Dems. However, leaving for another state would presumably place the legislators beyond the state's jurisdiction. (Fun fact: The state Senate leader and the Assembly Speaker are brothers -- and the new head of the State Patrol is their father.)

I asked the state Democratic Party for comment on this latest report, but communications director Graeme Zielinski was unable to confirm

DNC playing role in Wisconsin protests

The Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America arm -- the remnant of the 2008 Obama campaign -- is playing an active role in organizing protests against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's attempt to strip most public employees of collective bargaining rights.

OfA, as the campaign group is known, has been criticized at times for staying out of local issues like same-sex marraige, but it's riding to the aide of the public sector unions who hoping to persuade some Republican legislators to oppose Walker's plan. And while Obama may have his difference with teachers unions, OfA's engagement with the fight -- and Obama's own clear stance against Walker -- mean that he's remaining loyal to key Democratic Party allies at what is, for them, a very dangerous moment.

After day-long protests yesterday drew as many as30,000 people in Madison, hundreds of Wisconsin workers, students and allies camped out last night in the Capitol Rotunda as a hearing on Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) budget bill that eliminates collective bargaining rights for nearly all of the state’s public service workers went past midnight.

The state Senate is set to vote on the bill today. It was approved last night by the Joint Finance Committee on a straight party line vote with all Republicans backing the attack on worker’s rights. Today thousands workers and their supporters from around the state enter the third day of a massive protest against Walker’s plan.

Meanwhile in Ohio, where Gov. John Kasich (R) is mirroring Walker’s assault on workers with similar legislation to strip collective bargaining

MADISON, Wis. -- Democratic state senators have walked out of the state Capitol on Thursday as protests are expected to begin again, according to state Sen. Tim Cullen.

They are not expected to be there when the Senate goes in to session at 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, labor supporters are expected to return to the state Capitol for a third day of widespread protests against a proposal that legislators are considering to end most collective bargaining for the majority of state employees.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker thought he could cut the pay and trample the rights of more than 150,000 state workers and not face any consequences. Well, he was wrong. Tuesday, 13,000 people went to the state capitol to protest Gov. Walker's plan, and to tell their state legislators to oppose it. Dozens spent the night in sleeping bags in the Capitol Rotunda and thousands more arrived to protest on Wednesday.
