    The following was written by Matthew Di Carlo, senior fellow at the non-profit Albert Shanker Institute, located in Washington, D.C. This post originally appeared on the institute’s blog. By Matthew Di Carlo In the world of education policy, the following assertion has become ubiquitous: If we just fire the bottom 5-10 percent of teachers, our test scores will be at the level of the highest-performing nations, such as Finland. Michelle Rhee likes to make this claim. So does Bill Gates. The source and sole support for this claim is a calculation by economist Eric Hanushek, which he sketches out roughly in a chapter of the edited volume Creating a New Teaching Profession (published by the Urban Institute). The chapter is called “Teacher Deselection” (“deselection” is a polite way of saying “firing”). Hanushek is a respected economist who has been researching education for over 30 years.     We can't continue to set up a parallel system of public education in the city of Chicago. That's what we're doing right now. On one track, it's selective enrollment and magnet schools and charter schools. On the other track, it's the neighborhood schools. It's time to focus on neighborhood schools, and strengthen those schools, and take low performing schools and convert them into high performing schools, and that can be done without closing schools.     We had an abridged Saturday version of running errands. We simply went over to Peets for coffee, bagels and the NY Times. There’s no need to shop for the week since I’m off and I can take care of all that stuff later.

    The last few days the kids have been crazy excited. Y’know, loud, but in a good mood. Parents filled the hallways on their way to the holiday sing. Some dropped by the Art room to say, “Hi,” and drop off some cookies or a gift card to Target or Starbucks.

    The staff did a little Secret Santa. Mrs. D, who is a huge follower of the comings and goings of the Royal Family, got lots of wedding related stuff from her Secret Santa: maps of London, a framed portrait of the Queen Mum and

    Once dominant, now America is just average when it comes to education. Its public solution, recently communicated by Microsoft mogul Bill Gates? Increased class sizes, decreased teacher counts, fewer advanced degrees, and probably more mediocrity.

    It's the type of technocratic cure-all one would expect Gates to champion, and it will doubtless perform as lamely as Microsoft, which currently hobbles at $30 a share while its more intuitive tech rivals like Apple and Google respectively hover around $200 to $600. But Gates' short-changing of the nation's education system is just another strain of neoconservative austerity going viral in our global village.     St. Louis (KSDK) -- Students at Confluence Academy in downtown St. Louis are recovering from mace sprayed inside their school.

    The security guard sprayed mace after witnesses say a fight broke out between students. The fire department responded to evaluate students, sending 20 of them to area hospitals for what they describe as "wellness checks."

    Parents and students say a fight broke out involving several students around 1:30 p.m. School officials will only say there was an "incident" that required the security guard to spray mace. They would not confirm the exact nature of that incident.

    "I was standing right there so I could get let in the room, and all of a sudden I just started sneezing and coughing because I smelt the mace on me," said freshman Angel Jones.

    Edison Learning, out of New York City, manages the Confluence Academy charter schools in St. Louis. A spokesman tells KSDK they will be investigating why the security guard felt it was necessary to use
