LOS ANGELES--()--Today the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences, comprised of 225 influential education leaders and organizations, announced that Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association (NEA); Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT); and Tom de Boor, founder of AOL’s education, kids and parenting channels, have joined the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors. They join a cadre of other prominent leaders committed to education, including Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, Diane Ravitch, John Merrow, Linda Darling-Hammond, Daniel Pink and Timothy Shriver as the voting members of the Academy who will help select the Bammy Awards honorees for 2014.
Additionally, several new members have accepted invitations to join the Academy Council of Peers. They include Tom Murray, Director of Technology and Cyber Education for the Quakertown Community School District in Bucks County, PA; Katrina Stevens, a former teacher, administrator, and education consultant with the Tuscany Group; Sharon Plante, Director of Technology at Eagle Hill-Southport High School in Southport, CT; Alex J. Podchaski, Director of Technology at Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child in Summit, NJ; Susan M. Bearden, Director of Information Technology at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne, FL. Bammy Award honorees automatically admitted to the Academy Council of Peers include Jesse Hagopian, Marilyn Rhames, Pam Moran, Tony Sinanis and James Ewing.
The Bammy Awards were created in response to the relentless national criticism of America's public schools while all that is right in American education is largely ignored.
Underscoring the notion that it takes a village to educate a child, the Academy identifies, recognizes and celebrates the contributions of education professionals, para-professionals and support staff across the entire field -- from teachers, principals and superintendents to school nurses, advocates, researchers, early childhood specialists, facilities maintenance staff, special needs professionals, school board members, parents and more.
