Lee Nave Jr. – Small Place, Big Voice

Education advocacy can happen anywhere.
Last week I gave a thorough analysis of my firsthand account of the Ethiopian education system. I promise to next week continue the story on and show you readers more information about this wondrous place.
Before going any further in the next few weeks, I want to point out how education advocacy is not something that only occurs in West and East coast big cities. Advocacy for the education of our growing population can begin in all parts of the world. Today we will discuss a small little place known as Ottawa, Kansas.
Ottawa, Kansas is a small town about 45 minutes outside of Kansas City, Missouri. It has a population of around ten thousand and is the location of Ottawa University, which has existed since 1865.
The atmosphere of Ottawa is quiet and laid back for the most part. Everyone knows each other, both at the university and the town itself. This silent town, though, has tensions that are hidden for the most part.
At the University, strict rules with little student input exist, making the students feel irrelevant in the decisions on their future. This feeling caused students in 1966 to write an underground newspaper called The Needle.
