LAST CALL AT THE RED WAVE SALOON: MAGA TEAM CRIES INTO ITS BEER AS JUKEBOX PLAYS B-26

LAST CALL AT THE RED WAVE SALOON: MAGA TEAM CRIES INTO ITS BEER AS JUKEBOX PLAYS B-26

Big Education Ape Special Bulletin from the Dive Bar at the End of the Cycle

The mood at the Red Wave Saloon was already low when the jukebox clicked over to selection B-26. Nobody had picked it. Nobody remembered picking it. The machine seemed to have been waiting all night for the moment when the room could least afford a country ballad about endings.

The song was the new Kid Rock cover of “The Party’s Over,” a mournful, gravel-voiced lament for a movement that, according to the lyrics, had suffered injury and/or death by drowning in a blue wave. The first chord rang out and a grown man in a gold-trimmed hat put his face in his hands.

Hegseth Buys a Round

Pete Hegseth, seated at the bar’s center stool, did what any leader does in a crisis. He bought another round. Then he bought another round for the people who had already finished the previous round. Witnesses say the tab reached a level normally reserved for defense procurement, and that nobody could explain what any of it was for.

Members of the Trump Cabinet filled the booths along the wall. Nobody gave a speech. Nobody reorganized a department. They sang along, swaying with their drinks in the sticky glow of the neon beer sign, in the harmony of people who know every word because they helped write the first verse.

The Back of the Bar

Over by the pool table, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton moaned and wailed in the dim corner light, like two men who had just been told that even the cactus voted the other way. Even with all that Elon Musk money in the jar, the Lone Star State, according to the bar’s mood, had slipped into the blue. A patron said it sounded “like a coyote mourning a spreadsheet.”

Susie Wiles Does the Cheer

Near the dartboard, Susie Wiles delivered a flawless cheerleader impression, complete with pom-pom hands, a bright wide smile, and the unmistakable energy of someone telling a room that the scoreboard doesn’t count. It was a masterpiece of the form. No one clapped. A man in the corner whispered, “Give me a T,” and nobody had the heart to finish the cheer.

The Chyron of Doom

The television above the bar used to show Fox News. Tonight that channel was gone, replaced by the MS NOW chyron crawling across the screen like a slow, polite car crash. Every crawl sent a fresh wave of groans through the bar.

There goes Georgia. “NOOOOO.”

There goes Iowa. “NOOOOO.”

There goes South Carolina, too. A long, low wail, followed by a single glass sliding off a table.

Someone suggested changing the channel. Someone else pointed out that every channel was now the same channel. The bartender, a quiet veteran of eleven election cycles, simply turned the volume down and the jukebox up.

An Education Footnote

At a corner booth, a lone school board member from a billionaire-backed reform group stared into a half-empty pitcher and murmured that he’d been promised a “disruption.” The bartender replied that disruption has a way of working both directions, then slid over a glass of water and a copy of the school budget.

The Ballad of B-26

The song faded on its final chord. For a moment, the room was silent except for the buzz of the neon and a single, sniffling patron. Then the jukebox clicked, and, in a stroke of cruelty, it started again.

Last call came and went. The bartender flipped the sign to CLOSED, and the cleanup crew, as it turns out, was the American electorate.

“THE MAGA PARTY’S OVER”

(A satirical parody, sung to the tune of Willie Nelson’s classic, as performed in this article by the jukebox’s Kid Rock cover)

[Verse 1]
Fold up the banners, the roadshow’s through,
The red hats are thinner than they were on cue.
The rallies were thunder, the slogans were loud,
But the voters sent a memo to the crowd.

[Chorus]
Turn off Fox News, the party’s over,
The red wave hit the shore and rolled right back.
The faithful all argue who wrecked the show,
While the donors are checking their cash.
Hang up the hats, the party’s over,
And the 2028 hopefuls
Are all polishing their résumés.

[Verse 2]
What a crazy, crazy circus,
Billionaires dancing, tariffs and tax cuts,
Ballroom dreams and golden toilets,
And the eggs just kept on climbing.
The consultants write memos in twelve-point type,
Proving it’s somebody else’s fault tonight,
While the districts built for safety
Weren’t quite safe enough to hide.

[Chorus]
Turn off Fox News, the party’s over,
The champagne’s gone flat, the balloons are low.
The loyalists blame the ads and the weather,
The moderates blame the show.
Hang up the hats, the party’s over,
And the governors are stretching
For a run that no one’s asked them for.

[Bridge: The Succession Scramble]
Everybody’s a “serious politician” now,
Everybody loved the party till the bill came round.
Some want the fireworks, some want the old tradition,
But nobody wants to be the next one on the ground.

[Final Chorus]
Lower the lights, the party’s over,
The voters pulled the plug and took the keys.
The music stopped, the billionaires left,
And the voters hold the receipt.
Pack up the hats, the party’s over,
And tomorrow starts
The hangover again.

[Tag, spoken over the last chord]
The band went home, the bar’s gone dry,
The billionaires left, and the voters are holding the receipt.
