Speculating on how the IEA leadership will screw our pensions.

When I received Ed Rosenthal’s letter last week describing how IEA President Ken Swanson pushed through some crap at the Board of Director’s meeting about changing our legislative platform permitting the taxing of retiree pensions, I wondered, “What is that SOB up to?”

The representative of the retirees on the BOD opposed it. That meant nothing to Ken, whose lack of responsiveness to the rank-and-file is the stuff of legend.

Last RA, the student chapter pleaded with Ken not to change the legislative platform on the issue of a two-tier pension. The RA passed Ken’s proposal. A week later, with a green light from the IEA, Boss Madigan created a two-tier pension system.

As the Wisconsin protests have continued and spread to Indiana and Ohio, with solidarity rallies held in Sacramento and elsewhere, the strategy of Republican Governors becomes clear: cripple public unions. If there was ever any doubt about this goal, it was dispelled by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s conversation with a newspaper editor (impersonating billionaire conservative campaign contributor David Koch) in which Walker discusses their anti-union strategy. This conservative effort has important implications for the Sacramento area.

Not coincidentally, the effort follows a long decline of unions. In 1945, according to the Department of Labor, unions represented 34% of private employees, 10% of workers in the public sector. This is now reversed: 7% of private, 36% of public workers – the overall number of union workers declining from one in every three in 1945 to one in every eight today. Crippling public employee unions, in the guise of balancing state government budgets, could well put the finishing touches on unions.

Around 250 gathered in the Quarry Plaza, where speeches were made and the issue of access to higher education for students of color was communicated. Dear Governor Scott,

Are our legislators attempting to set a Guinness Record for record-breaking time to pass the most controversial legislation ever through a state? Have the rallying cries, protests, and turmoil in Wisconsin taught Florida legislators anything? We are a nation governed around laws; not a nation governed around power crazed men attempting to bypass laws.

Governor Scott, I'm pleading with you to please insist that all perspectives are heard and that the democratic process takes priority with regards to the"Teacher Quality" Bill.
