The Obama Plan to Allow Casino Capitalists to Set Student Loan Interest Rates

With the one year extension on student loan rates set to expire July 1, the President is following his standard negotiating strategy of carving out a position just to the left of proto-fascists’ mouthpiece, John Boehner: the President has come out in favor of allowing the manipulators of Wall Street to determine interest rates for student loans.  This would have the immediate effect of increasing the Stafford loan rate from 3.4 to 5, thus making the Everest of student debt even higher, while making it more likely that the non-privileged will never have a shot at college.
Even if the poor children who survive the sterilizing ed reform charter schools get accepted to a college that is not one of the predatory matchbook schools for the poor, then they will surely be saddled with school debt that means indefinite

They Canceled Class Today — All The Teachers Got Arrested While Protesting For Voting Rights

From the Sun-Times:

A group of parents — backed by the Chicago Teachers Union — wants Judge John Z. Lee to delay the closures for a year while they carry on their fight in court. They say in two class-action lawsuits that black and disabled students will be unfairly affected by the closures.
Lee on Thursday declined the parents’ request to issue a preliminary injunction against the closures before the school year ends, but he said he’d hear evidence at a hearing starting July 16.

National Council On Education Standards and Testing

The National Council on Education Standards and Testing was established by Congress in 1991 (P.L. 102-62; 102 Stat. 305). It may have had the worst acronym for any governmental entity ever—NCEST.
The council was created for the purpose of providing “advice on the desirability and feasibility of national standards and testing in education.”
NCEST had 32 members, most of whom were appointed by the Secretary of Education. NCEST was tasked with issuing its report by December 31, 1991.
The National Council On Education Standards and Testing (NCEST) met its deadline, publishing Raising Standards for American Education, which advocated national standards and assessments. RAND took issue with the findings, offering critical testimony before Congress. NCEST’s statute authorized $1 million in appropriations to do its work, and required it to disband 90 days after submission of its report.

The United Neighborhood Organization needs to adopt “robust conflict-of-interest” policies in the wake of a scandal that’s jeopardized tens of millions of dollars of state funding for UNO’s network of charter schools in Chicago, a retired federal judge hired by the politically influential group urged Thursday.
Former Judge Wayne Andersen also recommended that UNO — which relies largely on funding from the Chicago Public Schools for its charter operation — require sealed, competitive bidding for contracts for its schools.
UNO commissioned Andersen’s review, hiring him for $800 an hour, in response to reports in the Chicago Sun-Times that prompted Gov. Pat Quin
n last month to suspend the remaining payments to the group from a $98 million state school construction grant.
Those reports revealed that $8.5 million of the state funding went to companies owned by two brothers of Miguel d’Escoto, a top UNO executive who resigned his $200,000-a-year post in the wake of the stories, and that UNO did not follow the sorts of procedures that
