A Pennsylvania Parent Reflects on Teacher Heroes

Blogger Yinzercation is a parent of little children in Pennsylvania. She was reluctant to send them to school, but she did with assurances that they would be okay.
And she thought about the teachers and principal in Newtown. She read that there was a plan in Newtown to cut the budget of the schools, possibly eliminating the music teachers and the librarian. They too had sheltered the children.
As Yinzercation points out, the story in Newtown is about the heroism of dedicated professionals. It is also about the political context in which we protect our students, our teachers, and public education. Not just their physical safety, which is paramount, but the security and resources that enable them to teach and learn without fear.

Tasteless: StudentsFirst Ad Attacks Teachers in NYC

While I was watching the television coverage of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, an ad came on that was very upsetting. Sponsored by StudentsFirst ad, it was a typically deceptive TV ad depicting teachers and parents who demand that teachers be evaluated by test scores. It implies that teachers are slackers and need a swift kick to get to work. If they are evaluated, they claim, this will have a revolutionary effect on the schools.
Showing this anti-teacher ad at this moment in time was utterly tasteless. Just as we are watching stories about teachers and a principal and school psychologist who were gunned down protecting little children, we have to see this tawdry ad. Given the timing, it is political pornography.
The ad is meretricious. It does not mention that the city published the names and ratings of thousands of

Beautiful Statement by Connecticut’s Teacher of the Year

A reader (Linda from Connecticut) called my attention to this beautiful commentary by David Bosso, who is Connecticut’s teacher of the year for 2012. He explains his reaction to the tragic events at Newtown and how the brave actions of his colleagues helps the public understand the work of teachers. Every teacher in America is grieving their loss but is proud to be a teacher, inspired by their sacrifice and their love of their students.
He writes:
“To so many, the educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School demonstrate that the core values of education mirror the greatest ideals of humanity, and they are exemplars in this regard. They offer us hope, and reinforce

A Suggestion for a Meaningful Holiday Gift

Make a contribution to the Brady Center, which works against guns and the NRA.
Gun advocates think he answer is that everyone should pack a weapon. They want armed teachers and principals. Shoot outs in school.
How about if no one had a gun except law officers?
Give a gift to the Brady Center to honor those you love and to honor those who died in Newtown, the babies and their teachers and principal.

A Member of NY Regents: Are We Asking the Right Questions?

For the past year and more, the New York State Board of Regents has spent a huge proportion of its time designing and debating a test-based educator evaluation system. The system was developed by AIR (American Institutes for Research) and has been criticized as inaccurate by Bruce Baker, who says that even AIR recognizes how flawed the system is. Yet Governor Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Tisch say “full

Michelle Rhee Comes Out Against Guns in Schools

Well, this is a relief:
http://shar.es/hv1rZ
This morning, StudentsFirst CEO Michelle Rhee drafted a memo to the organization’s senior staff — it was later sent internally to the entire StudentsFirst staff — regarding the organization’s opposition to any and all proposed laws that would allow guns in schools. That memo is printed below in its entirety.

RE: Gun Control Laws
As an education reform organization, we try hard to remain singularly focused on those issues that directly affect student achievement, and to abstain from broader policy debates and political discussions that are outside our mission.
It is for that reason we did not take a position on measures like the one on the governor’s desk in Michigan that

Diane Ravitch's blog: Breaking News: Governor Snyder Vetoes Bill to Allow Guns in Schools by dianerav Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan vetoed a bill that would have allowed guns in schools. His reason was that the bill did not have a provision allowing schools to opt out if they didn’t want guns in their buildings. Presumably the next legislature, if so inclined, could make that fix. The only good response I can think of to Teach for America marketing VP David Rosenberg’s demand that Diane Ravitch take down her “reprehensible” post called “The Hero Teachers of Newton” is to repost it.

This much is clear: the teachers and staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School reacted with astonishing courage to the unthinkable, the terrifying intrusion of a man intent on murdering them and their students. With no thought of their own safety, they defended their children..

Everyone of them is a hero, those who died and those who survived.

Six of them died protecting the children.

We don’t know the names of the survivors, but we know who made the ultimate sacrifice. For their courage and selflessness, they are heroes of American

The in box. You can’t say Connecticut’s new “education reform” bill didn’t impact these heroes and all the other teachers and school professionals in Connecticut.

Fred, thanks for all you are doing out there!
As an avid reader of your blog, I truly appreciate you putting the truth front and center.
As a pro-public education blogger in Connecticut, we are all trying to come to grips with the incomprehensible events events of December 14, 2012.
But one thing we know, those teachers, like virtually all teachers were true first responders and true heros.
Diane Ravitch has been kind enough to posted a few items that we Connecticut public school advocates have written this week and we truly appreciate that – as we appreciated the blog post

Arming Teachers, School Cops Could Cause More Harm Than Good, Experts Say

A nation shaken by Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., is wondering what to do to prevent future tragedies. Some gun rights advocates have suggested returning to a time-worn strategy in lieu of gun control: keeping up with the proliferation of arms outside the schoolhouse doors by arming those inside.
If the principal of Sandy Hook had been armed with an M-4 carbine, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) argued on “Fox News Sunday,” she could have stopped the tragedy crucial minutes before the police. She could have “take(n) his head off before he [could] kill those precious kids.”
It is an argument using the logic of what critics call the “maximum guns” school of thought about preventing

California teachers retirement fund threat triggers sale of gun company | EdSource Today:

Less than a day after the California teachers pension fund threatened to withdraw its investment, a major private equity firm has announced that it will sell Freedom Group, a company it formed that includes the manufacturer of the rifle used by Adam Lanza to massacre 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.
Cerberus Capital Management is owned by billionaire Stephen Feinberg, who is a gun enthusiast and whose father happens to live in Newtown. Bushmaster, which produced the AR-15 semi-automatic weapon reportedly used by Lanza, was one of six gun companies that Cerberus had bought and consolidated into Freedom Group.
The California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) has invested $600 million in the Cerberus fund, which, the New York Times reported, translates into a 2.4 percent stake in Free

How My Son Really Started Walking

It’s obvious he does things his way.
When he first came out of the womb, he yelled at the nurses in the hospital for making reference to Lady Gaga’s version of his name. When in the nursing station, he slept on his side whereas everyone else slept on their back. During my first few hours with him, he pooped, peed, and spit up on me, the holy daddy trifecta. He didn’t care much for my swaddles, no matter how tight I wrapped him.
So it should come at no surprise that he didn’t want to follow the axiom: “You gotta learn to crawl before you learn to walk.”
First came the rolling around to get from point A to point B, and not even in a straight line. It looked more like roll

Thinking of Newtown « Deborah Meier on Education:

Thinking of Newtown

Dear friends,
If we extended the logic of the NRA one could say, “atomic weapons don’t kill, people do”.  So why are most people, including almost all NRA supporters, so worried about Iran developing a bomb? Because countries (like people) can’t kill without the weapons to do so, and they can’t kill a lot of people in one stroke without weapons of mass destruction.
That’s why we rightly fear the spread of such weapons. That should go for guns of mass destruction too.  I find it incredulous that about half our nation is so worried about a country half a world away, yet seemingly unconcerned about massively lethal weapons in their own midst.  We are not talking about weapons anyone would take out on a hunting expedition; I doubt any self-respecting hunter would use these weapons on a clump of deer.
There seems something wrong, even five days later, to be talking about the politics of the massacre in Connecticut.   None of this discussion is of any help to those dead children and their grieving parents. Nor for the
