Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:
THE GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT
I encourage you to meet your school or district earthquake drill requirements by participating in this year’s Great California ShakeOut on October 18, 2012. The first step is to renew or register your school or district on the Great California ShakeOut Web site at http://www.shakeout.org/.
The ShakeOut is designed to provide a sense of urgency about earthquakes and to encourage individuals, organizations, schools, and communities to get prepared, to practice what to do to be safe, and to learn what plans need to be improved.
Last year more than 8.6 million Californians practiced “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” and other safety procedures as part of the ShakeOut drill. Students and staff in more than 400 districts and many private schools accounted for 5.8 million of these participants. Broad school participation inspires businesses, organizations, government agencies, and individuals throughout the state to participate.
Registered participants will be given detailed information for their drills. The California Department of Education (CDE) has worked with many partners to create age-appropriate resources for planning drills, promoting participation, teaching about earthquakes and preparedness, and educating families. You can find these resources on the ShakeOut “How Schools Can Participate” Web page at http://www.shakeout.org/schools/.
The ShakeOut is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance. Members include the CDE, Southern California Earthquake Data Center, U.S. Geological Survey, California Emergency Management Agency, American Red Cross, California Earthquake Authority, California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, State Farm, county offices of education, and many others.

I have wasted far too much time with trolls lately. Maybe it's a sign of this blog's growth that I now have at least one full-time, dedicated troll stalking me here and at Blue Jersey who is quite conversant in reformy vocabulary.

I don't have a problem with tough arguments against me. I will admit, for example, that a troll did catch me oncesaying something dumb. Good for her or him. Good for me, too, because I need to keep on my toes.

So I've been very tolerant... but enough is enough. Here are the rules:

1) Racist, homophobic, anti-Semetic, misogynistic, etc. language will not be tolerated here.

2) If you say or imply that I am a racist, homophobe, anti-Semite, sexist, etc., you're gone.

3) Make your point and move on. If it's a dumb point, I'll keep it up, but I won't allow you to make it over and over

Detroit: Fire ‘Em All & Let God Sort It Out Later

Over 4,100 Detroit Public Schools teachers received layoff notices this month, according to theDetroit affiliate of NPR. They will each have to reapply next month in order to have a chance at a job in the district next year. Furthermore, new state law now prohibits Michigan school districts from rehiring or laying off teachers based solely on seniority. In Detroit, the decision will be based on evaluations.

Such mass firings are not uncommon in school districts and have become even more prevalent with the budget crises of the past few years. Ed Codes generally require districts to send out pink slips toward the end of spring semester, even though revenues are uncertain until the following fall. Thus, school districts typically send out far more layoff notices than necessary and
