A new review of police actions at UC Berkeley on Nov. 9 has some protesters calling it "a tactical handbook for warfare against students," while the author himself acknowledges his findings are controversial.
Notably, campus police should have been allowed to use pepper spray against student protesters, said Jeff Young, the UCLA assistant police chief who was asked to review UC Berkeley police actions that day.
"Some of these findings will be controversial," Young wrote in his 50-page report to Mitch Celaya, the UC Berkeley police chief. "This is unavoidable."

Shanghai -- Every Tuesday, the seventh-grade English class at Wenlai Middle School talks about what stories they've read that week in the English-language Shanghai Post. Alexander Oliver - it's not uncommon for Chinese kids to give themselves English names - said his recent favorite was the one about Barbie doll versions of Britain's Prince William and wife Kate Middleton going on sale.
"I don't understand why all the girls love William," he said. "Why would you marry someone just because he's a prince?" Alexander expressed himself in more clearly enunciated English than many American seventh-graders I have known, as did the other students trotted out for a group of visiting American journalists Thursday.

I am coming to this later than normal.  I slept until 7, surprisingly the cat curled up next to me not complaining nor demanding his breakfast.  There are four days of school until the end of 3rd quarter and the beginning of Spring break.  And several things in the news.
First, it is impossible to get away from tests of some kind.  As a classroom teacher I create my own, but at least they are tied to what I am teaching, and thus a valid indicator of what students have learned.  For my AP students, they can take back the multiple choice portions of their tests, look up what they got wrong and correct it with an explanation for half credit - after all, why just measure how poorly they did if the intent is to help them learn, why not give them a motivation to correct their incorrect understandings?  I started doing this last year and saw it have a positive impact upon learning.  Sad, the things one does not seem to learn until one nears the end of a teaching career!

Forget fancy shoes, glitzy jewelry....my one wish?  I wish Missouri had Robert Scott as Commissioner of Education instead of our commissioner (Chris Nicastro) who supports all the initiatives from Arne Duncan, even though they are unconstitutional, unproven, untested and underfunded.  Scott, Texas Education Commissioner, is taking a stand against Duncan and the DOEd.  From the Washington Post:

Over the next few days my blog will be a snapshot album of words describing what it is like to attend a premiere education conference, ASCD12. This is an experience that most educators rarely experience over the course of their careers. It is not an inexpensive proposition to send educators to national conferences. For some reason many districts use that as a reason to send the same administrators year after year to these conferences. I think administrators have the idea that their district leaders are best positioned to share all that is gleaned from the conference with the staff. Of course this is a generality and not every district does this. You may want to ask who from your district attends these conferences and how many have they been to over the years.
The cost of these conferences is steep. The organizations running them have to pay a big price for the venues required to accommodate the tens of thousands of educators and vendors who will walk through the doors. In addition to the cost of the conference, districts have to add transportation, lodging, and food for each individual. In the economic atmosphere of today, many districts may have trouble justifying the expense to those who have no understanding of the value of these conferences.
