In addition, many of these schools satisfy the children’s longing to identify with their racial history by incorporating cultural studies relating to their ethnicity. Ravitch to speak in California

By Dina Martin
Once an educational conservative and an early supporter of President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind policy, Diane Ravitch has shaken up the education world by doing a complete about-face on testing, accountability, and the merits of charter schools.
In the process, she has become a champion of educators who show up every day to teach their students.
Through her speeches, her appearances on popular shows such as Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show,” her tweets, and her best-selling book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, Ravitch continues to take on the privatizers, the charter school movement, and those who have little understanding of what goes on in the American classroom.
That’s why three CTA chapters in three urban areas are taking advantage of a visit by Diane Ravitch to host several public events in January. Sponsoring talks by Ravitch will be United Teachers Los Angeles, United Educators of San Francisco (co-sponsored by CTA and the California Federation of Teachers), and the Sacramento City Teachers Association.

Nine local associations have joined together to bring Ravitch to the Sacramento Convention Center on Jan. 20. The Sacramento City Teachers Association, which spearheaded the effort, is especially hoping to get Ravitch’s message out to a community that has been heavily pressured by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and his wife, Michelle Rhee, the former schools chief in Washington, D.C. Both have advocated radical reforms that include firing teachers, closing underperforming schools, and linking teacher and principal pay to student test scores.
“We’re very excited that Dr. Ravitch is coming to Sacramento, and we’re expecting educators and the public to come from throughout the region to see her,” says SCTA President Scott Smith. “At a time when teachers are under attack, she has a message that must get out.”

Why Parents Across America Opposes Florida’s Parent Trigger Legislation

Influential public school advocacy group Parents Across America stated its oppostion today to proposed Florida’s parent trigger legislation, calling the bill’s Parent Empowerment name “insidious and deceptive.”

Florida’s new legislation is modeled after California’s Parent Empowerment Act passed in early 2010. It is widely supported by backers of corporate reform.

The law creates a process known as the “Parent Trigger,” which allows a majority of parents at a low-performing school to sign a petition to trigger one of a narrow set of options – firing all or some of the staff, turning the school over to a charter operator, or closing the school.

None of these options improve the quality of the neighborhood public school

Although PAA strongly supports authentic parent empowerment, we oppose this Parent Trigger

During this political season, corporations are taking their turns lining up to sponsor political debates whose results are then made made entirely meaningless and irrelevant by subsequent unlimited blasts of negative ads that serve to buy the candidate most likely to prostrate himself completely at the feet of American plutocrats.

Since the 5-4 SCOTUS decision in Citizens United v FEC, we are quickly approaching the full realization of a new era of corporate post-partisanship, when political principles and democratic values are traded in for complete allegiance to the corporate creed of unlimited greed and positivized fascism.

It will take a Constitutional Amendment, but it can be done. Take a moment to see how:

Are D.C. school officials hiding test data?

Is this an intentional effort to deny parents, voters and taxpayers the information they need to judge the integrity of D.C. test results?

[instead of releasing the results DC] is going to hire another consultant to do another investigation. That will likely keep parents, teachers and students in the dark for a long time.

There is but one conclusion that can be drawn from the NYC Department of Education’s last minute walk out of negotiations over a teacher evaluation system for 33 schools placed in the Transformation and Restart models: it was always Tweed’s intention to refuse to enter into an agreement for teacher evaluations.

Part of the evidence for this conclusion comes from the conduct of NYC DOE officials during negotiations. Throughout the month of December, the UFT made intensive efforts to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion before the NYS Education Department’s deadline of December 31. Yet while UFT officers and staff canceled vacation plans to work on a potential agreement, key actors on the DOE side, such as the lawyer who writes up contractual agreements, were outside of New York City on vacation as the clock ticked down.

Last evening, the New Jersey Senate passed the Urban Hope Act by a margin of 53-3:

The charter school pilot bill designates three failing school districts - in Trenton, Camden and Newark - as renaissance school districts. The bill enables one or more nonprofit entities to apply to the state to supplant the existing non-performing schools with a total of four K-12 schools.

"It's permissive and not mandatory, secondly, and most importantly, this bill gives local control and input into this bill, and that local control is binding," said state Sen. Nia Gill (D-34).

State Sen. Ronald L. Rice (D-28) didn’t agree.

"Amend this legislation to take the City of Newark out," said Rice. "We

John Thompson: No Excuses Reformers Find Plenty of Them for NCLB

Guest post by John Thompson.

On the 10th anniversary of "the lost decade," produced by No Child Left Behind, we will read plenty of explanations of why the law did little good, and often did great harm to poor children of color. Ironically, the rationale for NCLB was that educators had long used poverty as an "excuse" for "low expectations." I am struck, however, by the low expectations that policy wonks had for themselves, how many excuses they are now making for the failure of NCLB, and how they minimized its unintended negative effects, as they blame others.

As long as the true believers in bubble-in accountability keep up their defense of the law, reporters have to follow the convention of saying that "the jury is still out," and that NCLB "did shine a light on underperforming minority groups," before they recount the law's failure to increase scores on national standardized tests. On the other
