Remember Obama's Labor Day speech?

"When union workers agree to pay freezes and pay cuts, they're not doing it just to keep their jobs, they're doing it so that their fellow workers, their fellow Americans can keep their jobs." --Pres. Obama
Remember, I called it a bunch of horse bleep? Well, here's what happened in

Back To School Tour | ED.gov Blog:

Working Together to Create World-Class Schools

Cross-posted from the White House Blog.
Now that our nation’s children are back in school, I will be travelling through six states with this important message: our nation’s long-term economic security is inextricably linked to education. We have to educate our way to a better economy.
The jobs of today and tomorrow will require knowledge workers with some postsecondary training, whether it is an associate or bachelor’s degree, or technical training available from a vocational school or community college.
Unfortunately, America has a long way to go before we can truly say we’re educating today’s children to be competitive in the knowledge economy. By many indicators, we’re falling far short.
The Obama administration has a cradle-to-career agenda to support states and districts as they reform their schools and make college more affordable for students. This agenda is designed around key principles, including:
  • Creating early learning systems that align all of their resources to get our youngest children ready for kindergarten.
  • Raising standards so they actually prepare students for success in college and careers.
  • Improving the quality of teaching in the classroom by improving the preparation, professional development, and evaluation of teachers and principals.
  • And turning around persistently low-performing schools that have been failing students for decades or even generations.
It’s an aggressive agenda, and we’re backing it up with unprecedented investments in reform. We’ve already made the largest investment in higher education since the GI Bill. We’re creating new incentives for states to align their early learning programs to ensure all children are ready for kindergarten. Through Race to the Top, states have made more progress in reform over the past two years than in the previous decade. And the President has a plan to fix No Child Left Behind by offering states flexibility from its one-size-fits all mandates.
Nevertheless, reform will happen in states and communities. Our job in Washington is to provide resources and support for the excellent work happening in states and communities.
That’s why I’m so excited about this week’s bus tour. All across the Midwest, members of my team will be visiting communities where elected officials, union leaders, business owners, and teachers are working together to transform the lives of children.
In these communities, we’ll hear the stories of people working together to create world-class schools. We’re going to see innovative approaches to fixing broken teacher evaluation systems, turning around underperforming schools, and tackling other challenges. We’re going to watch extraordinary people doing extraordinary things to transform the lives of children.
These are the inspirational stories that are happening all over America. They are the reason I’m optimistic that the American people are ready to embrace reform and prepare our young people to be leaders in the knowledge economy.

Happy First Day of School!

New pencils, new teachers, maybe a new school.

It's a big day for all. I wish all of you the best of luck and success for your child's(ren) school year.

For those new kindergarten parents, it's going to be okay. For those new middle school parents, good luck. For those new high school parents, tick tock, time passes more quickly than you think.

Don't be afraid to be an advocate for your child. There really is no one who will support your child as much as you will. Don't say "my kid, right or wrong" but also don't believe your child is wrong because someone else tells you so. I always remember what Greg Imel, our principal at Whittier, said, "I'll only believe half of what your child says about you if you only believe half of what your child says about me."

There is a sea change from elementary to middle school in terms of how you deal with teachers. Some of it is having more teachers, some of it is that those teachers have more children than an elementary school teacher,

Washington State PTA Considers Support for Charter Schools

I received a copy of the PTA's "toolkit" with information and paper handouts on issues. One of them was forcharters.

Upfront I'll say this is for local units to print out and give out to their members. Apparently, it's still up for discussion and I hope each and every one of you that belongs to a PTA gets it on the agenda at your school. This issue needs the fullest airing possible.

What is quite strange about the position paper is that it doesn't answer one simple question: why charters? It has no information about how they have performed or why they would work better. You'd think if you were

Union and Jenks school districts have filed a lawsuit in state court to challenge the constitutionality of a law that allows the use of public funds to send special-needs students to private schools.

In a petition filed in Tulsa County District Court Friday, the lawsuit names as defendants the parents of special-needs students who alleged in a federal lawsuit in April that the districts refused to provide scholarships last year for their children to attend private schools.

The school districts also are asking the court to declare Oklahoma's Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Act - or House Bill 3393 - and its subsequent amendments in HB 1744 unconstitutional and invalid.

"The voucher system that was put in place is going to be taking significant money from public

Mayoral control gets an F from New Yorkers

Arne Duncan has made mayoral control of urban school districts, an essential piece of his top-down school reform model. Duncan went so far as to say he would consider his time as education secretary a “failure” if more mayors didn’t take over city school systems by the end of his tenure.

But, according to a New York Times poll, New Yorkers are broadly

The Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice

This is a conference not to be missed. All are invited.

Dora

On Saturday, October 1st, the Fourth Annual Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice will take place at Chief Sealth International High School in Seattle, WA. The organizers are from four cities representing the Northwest — Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Portland. The conference is sponsored in part by award-winning Rethinking Schools magazine and the Washington Education Association (WEA).

The NWCTSJ has become the largest conference in the Northwest for teachers. Last year’s event attracted over 790 participants. This conference is all about inspiring teachers. It features workshops given by teachers who are chosen for their ability to interactively communicate practical tools for all learners in the classroom. Each workshop:

* Expresses a social justice perspective

* Is hands on and practical

* Gives participants a chance to talk to one another

This year’s conference keynote speaker is Karen Lewis, President of the 30,000 member Chicago Teachers Union, speaking on “Moving Toward Social Justice in These Hostile Times.” Special guest Stan Karp,Rethinking Schools editor and coordinator of the ‘Not Waiting for Supermen’ project will lead a workshop.

A large resource fair of local educationally centered non-profits will be tabling on site.

How Cross-Sectional Are Cross-Sectional Testing Data?

In several posts, I’ve complained about how, in our public discourse, we misinterpret changes in proficiency rates (or actual test scores) as “gains” or “progress,” when they actually represent cohort changes—that is, they are performance snapshots for different groups of students who are potentially quite dissimilar.

For example, the most common way testing results are presented in news coverage and press releases is to present year-to-year testing results across entire schools or districts – e.g., the overall proficiency rate across all grades in one year compared with the next. One reason why the two groups of students being compared (the first versus the second year) are different is obvious. In most districts, tests are only administered to students in grades 3-8. As a result, the eighth graders who take the test in Year 1 will not take it in Year 2, as they will have

Arne's Big Bad Bus Tour

Just like his boss did a couple of weeks ago, Arne Duncan is out doing a bus tour this week, touting the importance of education and the economy in a handful of Great Lakes communities. Friday afternoon he'll be atSchurz. Here's the bus he's on -- apparently they're really using it for travel -- and here's the list of schools and locations. The hashtag is #EDtour11 if you're into that kind of thing.
