Percent Job Losses in Post-WWII Recessions (via Calculated Risk)

The Markets and the Financial Media were stunned by the August Jobs report, which said there were no net jobs created in August. Whatever gains there have been in certain sectors of private industry, every parent in the country with school-age kids can tell you how a sizable chunk 0f those gains were erased.

      Cuts to school budgets.

Consider, for example, the situation in and around Pittsburgh:

As school starts across the region, the full impact of the approximately $1 billion in state cuts to education funding is becoming apparent.

Students may find more faces of their peers in classes and fewer faces of the adults — teachers, teachers aides, custodians and administrators — who have been furloughed. . .

Foreign Youth Give American Workers Lesson in Solidarity

The strike at Hershey by 300 foreign students here on J-1 work-study visas has been going on for two weeks now. According to Democracy Now, it is the first time that foreign students have engaged in a strike against their employer. Federal agencies have begun four separate investigations into the allegations of exploitation.

The students are now demanding that they be refunded the $3,000 to $6,000 they paid for the cultural exchange program (and the right to be exploited by Hershey) and that their jobs be given to local workers at a living wage.

The students came mostly from Eastern Europe and Asia. The fees they paid were supposedly to allow them to participate in a cultural exchange program. Instead, they became slaves of the Hershey Corporation. They were forced to do heavy lifting and work from 11:00 pm until 7:00

Creating and maintaining a set schedule for backing up your data can prepare you for any unfortunate breach that could occur despite your best efforts to remain secure.

Learn about establishing a backup schedule.

      5. Maintain up-to-date security patches:

Carefully review and install software patches as soon as they become available. This will help to reduce the amount of time that you are vulnerable to an attack.

Days after the Chicago Teachers Union union rallied with Wisconsin labor leaders, three schools broke ranks and voted to lengthen the school day.

Just days after ruling out a strike, the Chicago Teachers Union finds itself grappling with dissent and fighting for public support, as district leaders have begun circumventing the union in their push for a longer day this school year.

After pressing the union unsuccessfully to agree to a longer day throughout the summer, Chicago Public Schools officials are now asking individual principals if they are willing to lengthen the day. If they are, principals have their staffs vote on contract waivers, which the union has discouraged members from signing.

On Friday, three elementary schools–Genevieve Melody Elementary, Skinner North Elementary and STEM Magnet Academy—broke from the union and voted to lengthen their day by 90 minutes.

By day, the Balare Language Academy is an A-rated charter school, home to children in kindergarten through middle school.

But when the kids are tucked into bed, Balare apparently becomes a playground of a different kind.

Party fliers, printed and on the Web, indicate that the campus at 10875 Quail Roost Dr. has been hosting raunchy, booze-soaked bashes into the wee hours. One flier for an upcoming party features a voluptuous, scantily clad woman posing with champagne bottles. Another shows a woman in a string bikini bending over suggestively and a man with flashy jewelry sitting on a stack of currency in front of a gold sports car.

DENVER—Attorneys representing Colorado in a lawsuit over how it funds education say the plaintiffs want a utopia not required by the state constitution.

But lawyers representing parents and 21 school districts contended Friday that the state's method of funding education is irrational and leaves poor students at a disadvantage. Attorneys for both sides presented closing arguments Friday.

The Denver District Court lawsuit claims the legislature's funding method violates the state constitution's promise to provide a "thorough and uniform" education system. Gov. John Hickenlooper warns it will cost billions of dollars if the lawsuit succeeds.

The judge in the case is expected to issue a ruling in several weeks.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Why More Standardized Tests Won’t Improve Education « Parents Across America:

Why More Standardized Tests Won’t Improve Education

American students are spending growing amounts of time preparing for and taking high-stakes standardized tests. The federal government requires students to take annual state tests in math, English, science and social studies. Some states and districts have gone even further, requiring standardized tests for every subject, including art, music, journalism and physical education. Test scores are used to bar students from moving from one grade to another, to determine teacher and administrator pay, and to label schools as “failing” – a step that often leads to closure.

This expansion is occurring even though high stakes standardized testing has never been shown to improve student achievement or teacher performance, and even though the testing mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation is widely considered to
