    Rupe won't dupe NY teachers! The News Corp. mogul, rocked by scandal, will have to watch his back as New York educators move to throw out a big money deal with one of his companies.

    RELATED NEWS

    The state and city teachers unions called on the state Education Department to throw out a $27 million no-bid contract it is set to award to a News Corp. affiliate.

    The Daily News reported earlier this week that state officials moved to award the contract to Wireless Generation without a competitive bidding process and despite 16 other vendors expressing interest on a similar project.

    The two union presidents cited that report and the British phone-hacking scandal now engulfing the News Corp. empire in their letters to the Education Department

    I think I am developing some sort of man crush on Matt Damon. In fact, I feel almost chivalrous, as if I am defending his honor.

    New York City Parents File Lawsuit Against Separate and Unequal Charter Co-locations and Illegal Free Rent and Services to Charter Schools

    The New York City Parents Union, Class Size Matters and public school parents today filed a lawsuit charging the New York City Department of Education with creating a “separate and unequal” education system through the co-locations of charter schools in public school buildings.

    In New York City, charter schools are private non-profit education corporations which have contracts called“charters” with an authorizer such as the New York State Education Department or State University of New York to provide educational services. Charter schools are publicly funded but, to date, have usually been managed either by a for-profit corporation or by a non-profit corporation who has hired a for-profit corporation to assist with management. In these cases, a private entity is deriving a profit — a profit that is not necessarily benefiting our

    Once again experimenting with this thing of blogging each day from an event. Not terribly satisfied with yesterday’s quickly written piece… but on with the experiment!

    As I said yesterday, this my third AERO conference, my strategy has evolved to focusing on connecting with people, not so much in attending workshops for the content of those sessions. Today I continued to reconnect with (and introduce Sally to) people I had previously met, while also meeting and connecting with some new folks.

    Listen, these are intelligent people; they probably figured out the exact loopholes to make this legal, but on its face it simply isn't.

    As I've said before, Stand is a 503 (c) (3); and it's very likely that the people writing checks to it are claiming those expenses as charitable contributions. That's all fine, but 503 (c) (3) corporations have very specific limitations on their political behavior.

    It's hard for me to figure out how conduct described below is compatible with federal tax law.
