Michigan teachers report pressure to cheat

Nearly 30% of Michigan teachers report pressure to cheat on standardized exams, according to a survey by theDetroit Free Press. In addition, 34% of public school educators said administrators, parents or others pressure teachers to change grades.

At schools that don’t meet federal standards, the tension is higher: About 50% say pressure to change grades is an issue, and 46% say pressure to cheat on the tests is a problem.

Some cave in — about 8% say they changed grades within the last school year, and at least 8% admit to some form of cheating to improve a student’s standardized test score.

Another 17% report cheating by a colleague.

However, the most common cheating method — writing down vocabulary words to teach to next year’s classes

Modern School: Carnegie, Steel and the Busting of Teachers Unions (Part II)

Carnegie, Steel and the Busting of Teachers Unions (Part II)

In Part I, I described how education reformers, taking a play out of the Andrew Carnegie union-busting playbook, have been working to deskill the teaching profession, thus weakening the power of teachers unions. When teachers become easily replaceable with semi-skilled workers, like Teach For America candidates, substitute teachers and proctors, the unions will find it much more difficult to win strikes, as administrators or politicians will be able to simply fire them all or lock them out. The problem is that the unions have not been using the strike much at all lately, perhaps in part because they believe they are not strong enough to win. This may be a tragic miscalculation, not only for teachers, but for the children who depend on their skill, expertise and passion.

But first, what are the immediate lessons for teachers and their unions?

Lessons for Teachers and Their Unions
Carnegie was able to crush the AAISW through a combination of downsizing, speed ups, deskilling and military force. Teaching has not yet been deskilled to the point where teachers

URGENT ACTION: Tell The GOP that Pell Grants Are NOT Welfare

AEM has been reporting about the threat to Pell Grants since mid-May. It is on the chopping block, and some members of the GOP have described the program as being akin to welfare. Pell has helped many low-income and minority students pay for college. In the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, politicians have no business trying to slash such an important program. With the wealth gap between whites and minorities at its worst in decades, this is not a smart move. It's un-American. Tell your representatives, the ones who wish to cut Pell, that they are being anti-American. And while you're at it, tell them that if they don't raise the damned debt ceiling, that they are acting like economic terrorists and inflicting pain upon their own consitutents. It's time

Save Our Schools March leaders answer White House invitation

Organizers of Saturday’s Save Our Schools March in Washington, D.C., have declined an invitation to meet today at the White House with education advisers to President Obama, saying they would instead be available after the march.

The march, to protest the Obama administration’s corporate-driven education-reform policies, has been in the planning stages for about a year. Some of its organizers have tried for months to get the attention of the White House through letters and blogposts. Suddenly, a few days before the march itself, an invitation was issued for a meeting today.

The battle cry of Tiger Mother ex-chancellor Rhee

Will someone please tell former D.C. Schools chancellor Michelle Rhee that she has already told us, over and over again, how much her two daughters “suck” at soccer and that she can stop disparaging their athletic abilities in public?

Rhee, who quit as D.C. schools boss last October and took to the national stage as a proponent of test-based assessment systems, vouchers and charter schools, just gave yet another speech complaining that America has become one big, soft, anti-competitive marshmallow because parents keep telling their kids they are great when they aren’t.
