By Emily Fletcher , The Dartmouth Staff

Published on Friday, July 29, 2011

Former New York City public schools chancellor and current News Corporation executive vice president Joel Klein described the “crisis” facing the American school system in an increasingly globalized economy and explained how competition and innovation can improve the quality of schools in a lecture in Moore Theater on Thursday. Klein, who lectured to an audience of approximately 350 people, is the sixth speaker in the Summer term lecture series, Leading Voices in Politics and Policy.

The public school system’s powerful aversion to innovation is preventing Americans from

Senator Charles E. Grassley is examining whether Education Department officials disclosed confidential government information to hedge fund managers, including the well-known stock picker Steve Eisman.

The inquiry stems from the agency’s recent efforts to overhaul the for-profit college industry, which has been accused of saddling students with huge piles of debt. Expecting tough new rules in the wake of the controversy, Mr. Eisman and other hedge fund traders placed huge bets against the industry. In a letter this week, Mr. Grassley questioned the education secretary,Arne Duncan, about the agency’s ties to the hedge fund world and the lack of policies

The new leadership at Chicago Public Schools is taking another crack at one of the district’s thorniest problems: Involving parents in their children’s education. Parents, administrators and critics, who are skeptical and frustrated by past failures, say they hope the effort pays off this time.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s new public schools team announced Wednesday that members were delivering on their promise to help parents navigate a system long known for its bureaucratic complexity by creating a Chief Community and Family Engagement Officer, which they say will make

      Another setback in funding lawsuits

Plaintiffs rebuffed in broad equal-protection claim
By John Fensterwald - Educated Guess

An Alameda County Superior Court judge has dealt another blow to plaintiffs in two lawsuits claiming that the state’s “insufficient, irrational and unstable” school funding system violated children’s fundamental right to an education. Judge Steven Brick’s rulings this week (Go here and here) again limit attorneys’ constitutional claims and make an appeal of his rulings more likely.

In January, Brick denied the core argument of plaintiffs in the suits, Robles-Wong v. State of California and Campaign for Quality Education v. State of California. They argued that the state constitution establishing education as a fundamental right requires the

D.C. teacher: Why I believe I was really fired

Peter Gwynn, a D.C. public school teacher who was one of 206 teachers fired this month under the IMPACT evaluation system, writes here about why he believes he was really let go. The fired teachers, my colleague Bill Turque reported, amount to 5 percent of the 4,100 teachers in the system. IMPACT was first implemented under the chancellorship of Michelle Rhee, who quit last October and was succeeded by her deputy, Kaya Henderson. IMPACT has been criticized on a range of issues, with critics calling it arbitrary and punitive and primarily a way to fire veteran teachers. D.C. schools officials reject the criticism.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2011, a contingent of National Board Certified Teachers from California, including some members of Accomplished California Teachers (and hopefully, some future members) visited the offices of our state’s Senators and Representatives. Speaking in support of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, we sought to preserve what minimal federal spending goes towards education and supports NBPTS in particular. We noted that the research support for NBPTS is strong, especially considering the largest study of NBCTs, conducted by the National Research Council, which found unequivocally that students of National

'Save our Schools' Leaders Decline White House Invitation

The organizers of the Save our Schools March and National Call to Action are saying "no thanks" to a White House invitation to meet with education advisers to President Barack Obama tomorrow.

Organizers instead say the White House can come to them, or they'll come to the White House on Sunday. Obama officials had no comment on the executive committee's response to their invitation.

In a statement this evening, the executive committee said:

We sincerely appreciate the interest of the White House in the Save Our Schools March and National Call to Action. We'd be pleased to host any White House or Department of Education personnel on the Ellipse on Saturday so they can hear firsthand what teachers, students, parents and community members from around the country have to say about public education.
