    I admit I am a novice when it comes to critiquing basketball. Growing up, I never played the game, and I never watched it or read about it until I became a Portland Trailblazer fan a few years ago Yet, I am a lifelong teacher, used to studying the performance of students in order to help them learn better. I’ve brought my eyes to the game, and what I’ve learned there I’d like to bring back to the classroom.

    During the regular season, as I watched the Blazers play erratically I accepted the professional wisdom that the trouble was playing better teams, using the wrong strategies, being on the road, or having insufficient time off between games.

    Updated Interactive Maps, Data and Profiles on the Latino Population in U.S. Counties, States

    The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, has updated its interactive maps and database on the Latino population in the nation’s more than 3,100 counties. The maps show the Latino population and share in U.S. counties for 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2009 and how its size and distribution across counties has changed since 1980. The population data are derived from the decennial censuses and the Census Bureau’s population estimates program. Latino population data by county for 1990, 2000 and 2009 may also be downloaded from the Pew Hispanic Center’s website.
    Accompanying the county interactive maps and database are updated demographic and economic profiles of the Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. These profiles are based on Pew Hispanic Center analyses of the 2009 American Community Survey.
    The interactive maps, county Latino population data and state demographic profiles are available at the Pew Hispanic Center’s website, www.pewhispanic.org.

    For those of us of a certain age, we may not know his name, but we know what he did on this day.

    Thich is a title, an honorific, used by all Vietnamese monks and nuns, meaning that they are part of the Shakya (Shakyamuni Buddha) clan. Today most associate it with another Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.

    There is video of what happened this day in 1963 at a busy crossroads in Saigon. I will neither embed nor link to it.

    On this day Thich Quang Duc sat quietly as fellow monk poured gasoline over him, as a crowd held back by a ring of Buddhist clergy, and although there were police present, they could not intervene He set himself on fire and sat calmly as he was immolated. If you see the video, you will see one polliceman, himself a Buddhist, prostrate himself before the fireball that was consuming Thich Quang Duc.

    Later his body was re-cremated, but his heart remained intact. To devout Buddhists this was a sign that he was

    This day we leave Utah and enter Colorado. Dove Creek, Colorado is surrounded by bean fields. Interestingly enough, years ago, some folks retrieved some beans that had been stored by the ancient native dwellers of this region, the Anasazi. Today one can purchase Anasazi beans, one of the three major crops that were grown by Native Americans. One of the most famous Anasazi sites, Mesa Verde, is only a bike ride’s distance away. From Dove Creek, one gets an interesting perspective… snow tipped Tukuhnikivatz reminds us not to forget

    The Invisible Woman: The Non-Existent Rights of Domestic Workers

    I remember the shock I felt when I learned that the historic 1935 National Labor Relations Act – you know, the one that gives workers the rights to organize? — left out a large portion of workers in the United States: domestic workers. Ever hear about them? These workers, mostly immigrant women of color, are the people who clean our homes and hotels, take care of our elderly family members and raise our children. They do the work that’s expected of your stereotypical housewife, and they get paid for it (albeit, generally very little) — and like the wives and mothers who do this work for free, they are virtually invisible in the economy.
    Invisibility is a huge and complicated question for feminist and undocumented activists alike. Women feel invisibile and unappreciated for the countless chores they are expected to do simply because of their female identity; domestic workers don’t have the same rights behind them as industries with the right to unionize behind them. Undocumented immigrants must make themselves invisible for fear of the consequences of being found; their invisibility is both forced upon them by stripping them of basic humanity (“illegal alien” implies a less-than-human status) and protected, swallowed inside of them and hidden, with constant fear o

    The Joy of Summer Reading!


    I went to the library today! I left, struggling with an armload of books by some of my favorite authors, Kellerman, Sanford, Block. I lovingly placed the books in the back of my car, envisioning myself on the couch, deck, gazebo, curled up with one of my books, lost in the story. I am also a Nook owner , but I love the feel of a book in my hand. I would read it at lunchtime, with only the light from my desk lamp illuminating each page. I relished those 20 minutes, lost in a book or my Nook.

    As you might have guessed, I am an avid reader. I’m one of those people who writes Reading as their hobby. I was that kid, devouring a book, while the other kids played in the street. I’m the teacher, who reads in her dimly lit room, instead of eating in the Teacher’s Lounge.

    I tried to pass my love of reading to my students. I managed to snag a few of them when I read “Series of Unfortunate Events” aloud. I also made a habit of giving them a little teaser of whatever I was reading at the time. But too many of
