    I’m supposed to be an education reporter, not a crime reporter, but lately there hasn’t been much of a distinction.

    Today I reported on a tragedy that unfolded at a market near Youth Empowerment School in the East Oakland hills — which, according to the school principal, is about to close (not merge into the Castlemont campus, as originally planned).

    On Tuesday morning, a 14-year-old YES freshman cut school and, police said, got into a violent struggle with the 57-year-old owner of Oak Knoll Market over bottles of vodka he was trying to steal. When the boy fled, the owner followed in his car

    Since comments on this Jonathan Alter hit-piece against Diane Ravitch appears to have “closed” comments, I included my rebuttal here:

    Healthy Skepticism

    I am a teacher in a so-called failing school. I have spent my 10+ year career teaching in high poverty schools. Like most schools in poor neighborhoods, they have been low performing, and always in one of the many “reform” programs that have been promulgated during my career (California’s II-USP, Program Improvement under NCLB, and “Turn Around” Reform under RttT).
    So-called “miracle” results are used as a blunt instrument to rap those of us teaching in those schools about our heads when we are not able to lift test scores more than the 5% a year that is a reasonable increase. It is perfectly reasonable to question these miracles by comparing scores to other tests because you are not saying

    The intense pressure teachers and other Illinois state employees put on members of the General Assembly was made apparent to me Friday night at 10:30.

    Anne and I had just gone to bed when the phone rang.

    “This is Dan Kotowski.”

    “Who?”

    “Dan Kotowski. Is this a bad time?”

    I’m not exactly used to getting calls from state senators at any time, let alone at 10:30 on a Friday night.

    “No. It’s okay, I guess.”

    Then he launched into this tirade about how all these people have called him claiming he had voted for Senate Bill 512. And that my blog was the reason.

    It’s the end of the school year, a time for reflection. What worked? What didn’t? And what could I change?
    I believe this is a question we should ask ourselves, “Am I the type of teacher I would want for my child?” If you don’t have kids, replace “your child” with niece, nephew, little brother, you choose. But the question remains the same. Would you send a letter to the principal requesting that your child be in “your” class? Are you the type of teacher you would be happy to leave your child with 6 1/2 hours a day?
    My colleagues and I thought of this question after attending the PLC summit in Arizona. We felt it would be a great question for teachers to ask themselves. We

    I'm still officially on shore leave, but I thought I'd chime in for a moment to post some of the letter I received from Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-14) in response to a small avalanche of faxes, emails, and voice messages I left to her during the recent pension fracas. Kelly is fabulous-- a Democrat who seems to be actually interested in the little guy, unlike the stand-for-nothing head of her legislative house.

    (For the life of me I can't get embedit.in to work tonight, so I'm just going with screenshots.) (By the way, this is not a private letter so I don't feel wonky about publishing it here.) (I'll lighten up on the parentheses now.) Here's one paragraph from her letter:

    There's an old quote that comes out the early labor movement: "First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you."

    From the heat coming off the attacks from ed journalism's junkyard jackass opinionator, Jon Alter, there is a fire being stoked by the Billionaire Boys Club, where an inability to buy the truth has reached a crisis point that demands that the truth tellers, now, be burned at the stake.

    Long before the stakes were set and the wood piled, however, Alter was the well-worn, um, tool, shall we say, for the corporate thrusting that has long sought to degrade and humiliate those resisting the corporatization of schools. A couple of earlier examples that would come to inspire the likes of Governor Scott Walker and Chris Christie, the first from 2008, when Alter was writing for the bankrupt rag, Newsweek:
    . . . .Railing against the tyranny of tests is fashionable, but it isn't going to save our children and our economy in the 21st century. Nor will more money for important programs like art and music.
