For 22 months I facilitated a cohort of 11 teachers working to attain their master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. We met weekly at Glen Park Elementary School with seven of the eleven teachers in the cohort on staff at Glen Park.

You cannot find any teachers as skilled, hard working and dedicated to building community as these seven teachers. Closing Glen Park, dispersing students and staff would be a loss to New Berlin and public education. This is a high performing school whether compared to schools statewide or within New Berlin. It would be a travesty to lose this model program.

Fix the building and continue the Glen Park tradition!

Whoa, stop right there reformer. Pull out a factoid (It’s all about teachers) with: no inkling of the realities accompanying it. Then ``reform incorporated” pushes to transfer that one little factoid without the rest of the support pyramid beneath the factoid. I lived in Korea, taught in Korea, my wife is Korean and although it is wretched I can speak some Korean.

SALT LAKE CITY — Ralliers filled the steps of the Utah State Capitol Saturday morning, showing support for organized labor and advancing Monday's "We Are One" events across the country that will remember the April 4, 1968, assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Wisconsin continues to be a focal point to workers' rights issues because of a partisan effort to curb most state workers' collective-bargaining rights as a way of cutting wages. Similar actions followed Ohio and are on the legislative agenda in Florida as cash-strapped states look for ways to improve their bottom line.

In Utah, unions see threats from the Legislature, including the recently repealed HB 477, which would have limited the public's access to communications involving state lawmakers.

Jim Judd, president of the Utah AFL-CIO, said lawmakers are taking advantage of a down economy to attack the wages of the middle class. "The sad part is many of these administrators, governors and state legislators are looking at taking away a long-established process where they get together, discuss, meet and confer over issues and make decisions, in favor of governors being able to unilaterally impose their will on those employees."

WASHINGTON -- This year's commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination in Memphis during a 1968 labor dispute has galvanized union activists and progressive forces against what they see as a wholesale assault on labor rights.

Events scheduled for today and Monday's official 43rd anniversary have been organized by the AFL-CIO's "We Are One" campaign and individual unions from coast to coast.

Local 1733 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represented the striking sanitation workers King came to Memphis to assist, will hold its annual march to the government plaza Downtown Monday as well as events at the National Civil Rights Museum today.

We have also committed ourselves to do whatever it takes to reverse the damage that has been inflicted on teachers, students, and families. The faux news report originated with the anti-union Mackinac Center for Public Policy. The IEA linked to it through a local anti-union blogger.

The heart of his argument, in this op ed, is these three paragraphs:

Critics argue that we are inconsistent, even hypocritical, in our military interventions. After all, we intervened promptly this time in a country with oil, while we have largely ignored Ivory Coast and Darfur — not to mention Yemen, Syria and Bahrain.

We may as well plead guilty. We are inconsistent. There’s no doubt that we cherry-pick our humanitarian interventions.

But just because we allowed Rwandans or Darfuris to be massacred, does it really follow that to be consistent we should allow Libyans to be massacred as well? Isn’t it better to inconsistently save some lives than to consistently save none?

I am a Quaker, but I supported this intervention on humanitarian grounds, as I wrote here.

Kristof offers some cogent arguments, which people should read. I have some more of my own.

When it comes to upgrading education to the 21st Century, those who are less supportive of change, often hide behind, or are frightened of acronyms like FERPA, CIPA, COPPA. This is sometimes done intentionally for convenience, or unwittingly out of ignorance. Of course in a litigious society such as ours has become, law suits are foremost in the minds of administrators. It is for that reason that a clear understanding is needed by all constituents. Our students need adults to stop being afraid, and stop hiding, so education can get out of the shadows and into the light of the world in which our children live.

These acts were created to protect children. They were not created to keep students stuck in the past, educated
