This is super cute... and a little sad. But inspiring. What would you give to save a teacher's job? Meet Jocelyn Lam, a fifth grader at Camino Grove Elementary in Arcadia, CA who basically gave everything she had in an attempt to stop teacher layoffs.

When Jocelyn found out that teachers in her school district were in danger of losing their jobs due to budget cuts, she emptied her piggy bank and donated her entire life's savings -- $300 -- to her teacher: People Are Awesome: Fifth Grader Donates $300 Life Savings to Stop Teacher Layoffs.
Last Friday, Lam gave her teacher an envelope full of $1, $5, and $10 bills totaling $300—money she'd earned over several years for doing chores and getting good grades. Well, it's official. Alexandra Wallace, creator of the infamous "Asians in the Library" video, is withdrawing from UCLA, despite the university's decision not to discipline her. The problem with writing about the depressing corrupt reality of public education on a daily basis at the Los Angeles Unified School District and virtually every other purposefully constructed to fail inner city minority filled public school district throughout this country is that it is depressing as hell.

Teachers, students, and parents that remain trapped in this system tend to naturally become apathetic as to the chances of ever turning things around based on their daily dose of a rote anti-intellectual approach to what could easily be changed into the joys and excitement of real education and the excitement of allowing their imaginations to run wild with all the possibilities as to what their lives could be. I'm reading Lord of the Flies with my 9th-grade daughter. I don't exactly love it. The prose is leaden and confusing, and her teacher insists on making every word, no matter how obscure or impractical, a required part of study. But despite my misgivings, the book's message is starting to resonate with me.

Americans are all riled up against our particular beast--quite different from that in the book--more modern, frightening for different reasons, but still ourselves. In the press of other news, like rampant budget cuts, school closings, rising class sizes, and harmful co-locations, we have failed to focus on one of the most important issues that will determine the quality of education in NYC schools for years to come: the five year capital plan.

On Wednesday, the Panel for Educational Policy will vote on this plan, which compared to DOE’s previous proposal issued in November, cuts the funding for new capacity over five years by almost $6 billion.

Spending is slashed for new seats from $8.8 billion to $2.9 billion, and the number of new seats is cut by 30,000, or 67% . At the same time the DOE wants to spend $1 billion on new technology, including $542 million next year alone – so that they can the spread of online learning to 300-400 schools over the next few years.
