"No Deal" Republicans Demand Democrats Return to Wisconsin to Debate

Always remember this week as the single moment the Republicans gave up any future arguments about allowing more time, bipartisanship and an open debate over lawmaking. We knew it wasn't true then, but could anyone have imagined such a blatant abandonment of their phony list of rules? Did they actually try ramming their agenda down our throats?

State Sen. Jon Erpenback had to laugh when he was asked to return to the capital to debate a "no deals" bill. What we are seeing is a shocking display of government power over labor. Sen. Erpenbach appeared on Upfront with Mike Gousha (goo-shay):

MADISON, Wis. -- The head of Wisconsin's powerful teachers' union is calling on educators to return to classrooms Monday and Tuesday rather than continue being absent to protest an anti-union bill at the state Capitol.

The protests against a bill that would take away public workers' right to collectively bargain for their benefits and working conditions forced several school districts to shut down last week after teachers called in sick to join demonstrators in Madison.

Mary Bell is president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council. She said on Sunday that it's time for her members to return to work. For districts that do not recognize Monday as the President's Day holiday, she said teachers should go to work. Others should report as scheduled on Tuesday.

Bell says teachers will continue opposing the proposal.

Statement of Support for Union Members in the Public Sector from AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon

Posted February 20, 2011

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 20, 2011) - The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists today released the following statement from National President Roberta Reardon supporting the efforts of public sector union members in Wisconsin, Ohio and other parts of the nation who are struggling to protect their basic right to collective bargaining:

On behalf of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFL-CIO (AFTRA), we extend our solidarity and support to the men and women of the public sector unions of Wisconsin, Ohio and throughout the nation who are standing up for their right to organize and bargain collectively.

America's public sector workers are the backbone our society. Public sector union members educate our children; care for us when we are sick; enforce our laws; sustain our public works; protect our environment; keep our public transportation moving and risk their lives to provide us with relief services.

The attack on public sector union members currently underway in Wisconsin, Ohio and in other parts of our nation is an attack on all union members and the rights of all Americans. Just as AFTRA members have sacrificed at the bargaining table to provide

(CNN) -- Thousands of teachers, nurses, firefighters and other public sector workers have camped out at the Wisconsin Capitol, protesting Republican Gov. Scott Walker's efforts to reduce their take-home pay -- by increasing their contribution to their pension plans and health care benefits -- and restrict their collective bargaining rights.

Republicans control the state Legislature, and initially it seemed certain that Walker's proposal would pass easily. But then the Democrats in the Legislature went into hiding, leaving that body one vote shy of a quorum. As of this writing, the Legislature was at a standstill as state police searched high and low for the missing

What’s up Wisconsin?

With all the education and labor issues this week brought to us by the state of Wisconsin (go Badgers!), I’ve spent more time on Twitter and Facebook, trying to keep up, than on blogging. I see three problems with what is being proposed:

  • Governor Walker and his supporters are being disingenuous about what they are doing. They insist this is about budget concessions. The unions have agreed to discuss the cuts, what the unions and opponents are objecting to are provisions to strip government workers of their right to bargain

Tracy Fuller, executive board president of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association, says in a statement on the association’s website that he regrets the endorsement by the Wisconsin Troopers Association of Gov. Scott Walker.

The law enforcement union’s members were not included in Walker’s assault on jobs and collective bargaining rights. (We’re sure the fact the group endorsed Walker is just coincidence. Not.) Fuller also says he regrets “being the recipient of any perceived benefits provided by the governor’s annointing.”

More from Fuller:

I value all of the…agencies around the state. I don’t know how any of us could function without any of us around the state. We all need each other…

From the vantage point of the pancaked fields of Illinois, it is easy to wax nostalgic about Ohio's rolling hills. I spent four years there as an undergraduate and for many years thereafter I returned for several months each year. But my decades of AAUP activism have added a new and more telling element to my fondness for the state: respect for Ohio's brand of faculty activism and union solidarity.

All this was first brought home to me when I spoke at the 25th anniversary of the AAUP collective bargaining chapter at theUniversity of Cincinnati years ago. The chapter's history, celebrated and retold, included the distinctive respect and affection across departments that faculty members forged during their union job actions

A comment from Matt.

We know how this is going to resolve itself. Walker and the rest have become so inured of conservative sophistry that they will willingly snort the Koch-aine of some silly scheme or another. I guess if I really believed that the state of whatever, was actually a business, and should be beholden to only those business principals, than it’s only reasonable to believe that bankrupting the state in order to get out from under it’s financial obligations is in the natural order of things. It’s happened before. I have no worries about the rank and file finding greener pastures in the private sector, but who’s going to pick-up the trash on Tuesday?

Leader Pelosi: I Stand In Solidarity With The Wisconsin Workers

Leader Pelosi this afternoon:

As we gather here, in Wisconsin right now we’re watching an extraordinary show of democracy in action. Wisconsin’s workers, teachers and public servants must have a seat at the table to fight for good wages and a safe workplace. I stand in solidarity with the Wisconsin workers fighting for their rights and especially commend all the students and young people leading the charge, again, for fairness and for opportunity in their community.

SOLIDARITY (AND DEMOCRACY) FOREVER #wisolidarity #wiunion #weac

Former construction worker Tim Dunlap knows he's lucky to have a decent pension that allowed him to retire last November at an age when many of his peers still have to work at least another decade.

But he worries about his youngest son, who also works in construction, and his oldest who teaches in Monroeville. He said both their futures could be at risk if a proposed Senate bill is approved Tuesday to restrict the bargaining power of public employees.

Dunlap, 54, and many of the more than 400 others who crammed into the UAW Local 913 hall Saturday morning to support teachers, safety officers and other government workers fear the measure will eventually extend to the private sector, creating the domino effect of making Ohio an anti-union state.

"You don't realize you're dead until the hearse is at your door," said Dunlap, a member of the Labor International "We just want what's fair for all workers."

American Corporatocracy: Wisconsin Style

This week, in the American corporatocracy, we witnessed Wisconsin Republicans, including their newly minted Governor Scott Walker (no relation to my brother), attempt to bust the unions. To do this, Walker and his Republican allies maliciously manufactured a financial crisis.

For decades the lairs on the Right have been scheming to strip workers of their right to collectively bargain with employers. The reason is simple, if you’re a proponent of the corporatocracy, the last thing you would want is an empowered work force. In fact, the real endgame for the folks that believe America should be turned over to a corporate power structure is the elimination of the middle class and the establishment of a vast underclass. Think about it.

For nearly 150 years, the corporatists have subtlety and sometimes
