Mark Tangarone: Weston TAG teacher leaves over evolution flap

Mark Tangarone, who teaches the Talented and Gifted Program at the Weston Intermediate School, said he is leaving because he was told he couldn’t teach evolution. Administrators refute that claim. —Patricia Gay photo

Mark Tangarone, who teaches third, fourth, and fifth grade students in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program at Weston Intermediate School, said he is retiring at the end of the current school year because of a clash with the school administration over the teaching of evolution.

“Under normal circumstances, I would have retired in two more years. However, I feel that because of an unacceptable administrative action, I can no longer continue teaching in Weston,” Mr. Tangarone said.

Mr. Tangarone, a 17-year veteran of the Weston school system, claims that a program he wanted to teach about Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln was rejected by the school administration because it involved teaching evolution — the scientific theory that all life is related and has descended from a

School expulsions hit minorities, special ed students hardest

A new report Wednesday showed that minority and special education students are more likely to be expelled from Texas schools than other students. The report from Texas Appleseed, a public interest law center, found that 8,202 students were expelled from regular schools in 2008-09, with most sent to Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Programs. The Dallas school district - the second largest in the state - expelled the largest number of any district at 408.
"Being expelled from school increases these students' chances of advancing farther in the school-to-prison pipeline," said Texas Appleseed Legal Director Deborah Fowler. Citing the study's breakdown of students who were expelled, Fowler said her group is "seeing a disturbing trend: minority and special education students are being expelled at rates disproportionate to their representation in Texas' student population." For example, while

A Global Golden Age for Broadband

Ramon Nuez - 04/14/2010 01:29 PM
Today, we are at the perimeter -- the very periphery of a Global Golden Age. A period of prosperity where information is available in near real-time and it is this availability that changes societies. I make this claim with a certain amount of conviction. This certainty is fed by the fact that we...

Maternal Mortality Decrease is not "Mission Accomplished"

Serra Sippel - 04/14/2010 01:23 PM
While the decrease in the maternal mortality ratio reported yesterday by the Lancet is a victory, it is anything but a "mission accomplished." We are not off the hook--the same report also documented that HIV is responsible for more than 60,000 maternal deaths each year. The US--whose maternal morta...

The Most Important Vote for Higher Ed

Jonathan Stein - 04/14/2010 11:51 AM
In the carnival of horrors that is California's budget situation, perhaps the most gruesome exhibit is the University of California system. The 10 campuses in what we students call "the UC" have been devastated by budget cuts and are in danger of losing their title as the greatest public university ...

Why I Don't Pay Washington DC Parking Tickets

Eric C. Anderson - 04/14/2010 11:38 AM
In a perfect world law enforcement is equitable, color blind, and absent a religious bias. That perfect world does not exist in Washington DC, particularly when it comes to traffic enforcement. Please note I am not talking about stopping cars because the driver is black, brown or white. My compl...

Student Journalists Weigh In: Huckabee In the Wrong

Leah Finnegan - 04/14/2010 11:12 AM
We asked our HuffPost College news network for their reactions to the Huckabee scandal. The testimonials we received agreed on two things: The Perspective ought to post an unedited transcript of the interview, and Huckabee was out of bounds. Here's what our editors had to say: While I'm sure that ...

The Dangerous Drift Back Towards Segregated Schools

Marian Wright Edelman - 04/12/2010 09:14 AM
Two recent decisions by school boards in North Carolina are local signs of a troubling national trend towards resegregation in public schools. In New Hanover County, which includes Wilmington, parents and advocates spent much of last year debating a new middle school redistricting plan that would fo...

Evidence that University Shredded Documents Showing Expenses for Sarah Palin Speech

By David M. Greenwald
A controversy has arisen involving Sarah Palin's speech at CSU-Stanislaus and university efforts to avoid disclosure of documents showing how much money they spent to bring the controversial former Vice Presidential Candidate to their campus.
In an effort to get disclosure, Senator Leland Yee asked that the university disclose all documents related to the Sarah Palin event. CSU-Stanislaus responded that they had no documents related to that request.

Joel, Randi and me.

When I reported in middle schools I always picked up stray notes off the floor. A highlight of my collection is a crumpled piece of loose-leaf that says in now-fading pencil:
ASHLEY VS. SARAH
THE BATTLE IS ON

I keep it above my desk and couldn’t help but look at it when Jane Hannaway asked me to moderate a teacher quality forum at the Urban Institute featuring Joel Klein and Randi Weingarten. Unlike a middle school catfight, however, this discussion will be enlightened and incisive, and will involve the principal’s office only insofar as the
