LACDP Statement on the Democrats for Education Reform’s Response to LACDP’s Cease & Desist Letter

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement in response to the Democrats for Education Reform’s statement on LACDP’s cease and desist letter:
“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party has always worked side-by-side with teachers and educators to stand up and fight to improve public education for our students.
“However, no organization or person, including the so-called ‘Democrats for Education Reform,’ is above the law and they may not buck the statutory requirements set forth in law. We are surprised at former State Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero’s comments. As a former Senate Majority Leader, she is fully aware of the requirements of California’s Elections Code and campaign finance laws.
“Third party groups, such as EdVoice, that deceive voters with independent expenditures to promote and insinuate the purported support of Democratic-sounding groups like DFER, while being funded by Republicans and conservative organizations, serve only to mislead voters and distort truth.
“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party stands behind our cease and desist letter and looks forward to the Democrats for Education Reform’s prompt compliance with its legal obligations as set forth in the provisions of the California Elections Code.”

A lawsuit against the Judge Rotenberg Education Center (JRC), in Canton, MA, came to a close on April 24. The lawsuit was filed by Cheryl McCollins, whose autistic son, Andre, was shocked 31 times over the course of several hours at the school.

The Rotenberg Center is a “special needs” school that openly uses “aversion” therapy, including electric shocks, to discipline its students. According to a former teacher at the school (who has started a Change.org petition to end the practice), teachers are instructed to shock

Only one Missouri House member who received her “political contribution” voted against her bill.
A watered down HB 1526 eliminating the use of seniority in determining teacher layoffspassed by an 83-78 margin, one vote more than necessary, with Talboy, who received a $1,000 contribution from Students First on March 27, and Penny Hubbard, D-St. Louis, who banked a $500 check the same day, voting on the winning side.

“When the bill came up for a second vote on Thursday, the same disgusting procedure took place. I watched as some members that did not support the bill voted no, and almost ran out of the chamber so as not to have to endure the pressure. It was interesting to watch this play out. You could see the group supporting the bill surround individual members, when the voting board indicated that member had just voted no. If you wanted a few moments, after the supporting group surrounded the member, looked at the board again, you could see the individual member switch their vote to yes. Then the gang of supporter would move on to their next target, another member who dared to vote no.
Many members who stood up to the leadership came out of the chamber and said things like, “I guess that vote killed any chance of me being a committee chair,” or “they came to me six or seven different times asking me to switch my vote.” In the end, there were many members who stood up to the bullying tactics employed by the House Leadership, but not enough.
Many of the members who decided to vote with their leadership and not with their constituents back at home will have a difficult time explaining this vote.“

“The gap between the District’s best- and worst-performing schools has been growing amid the most intense school reform in the city’s history, according to a report commissioned by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
… The American Institutes for Research found that, if two students have the same test scores in 2010, but one attends a wealthy, high-performing school and the other attends the opposite, the student at the wealthy school likely would have outpaced the latter student substantially in 2011, even though they were on equal footing the year before.“
