You have heard this from me before, and you’ll hear it again. People who are in charge of public schools are placed there to lead them. They are there to help them get better. They are appointed or elected to solve problems, not to abandon public schools.
When they take charge, they are supposed to be (in Phillip Schlecty’s term), moral and intellectual leaders of the public schools.
They are not appointed or elected to hand off their responsibility to the private sector. That is not leadership. That is an abandonment of responsibility. That is a clear indicator of leaders who lack the knowledge to improve schools and who lack the moral sense required of those in public office.
Yet this is the plan for Camden, New Jersey. Ten schools will close now, undoubtedly more later. The New

A day after student riots shook a Liberal Party meeting in Quebec, there are reports of life-threatening injuries to protesters … and a possible resolution to the province’s massive twelve-week student strike.
Students from around Quebec gathered to protest at the Victoriaville meeting of Quebec’s ruling Liberal Party, chartering more than fifty buses from around the region. The students were protesting plans to raise tuition at Quebec’s colleges and universities by some $1,625 over the next five years.
Police erected crowd-control barriers far from the convention center where the meeting was to take place, but the students quickly dismantled them and surged toward the meeting site. Police and media claimed that some

Unschooling in the Art of Religion

It is my continuing effort to promote the concept of “unschooling”, the process of learning from real life, outside any formal learning environment, and without a teacher. It is a mostly unsung method of human development that often gets short shrift compared to more formal modes and venues for education. We conventionally think of education and learning as an activity focused on our younger years, but at our bests we humans continue to be natural and voracious learners throughout our lives. We are beginning to acknowledge that human propensity with the concept of “lifelong learning”.
As I have said before, becoming familiar with the concept of unschooling reading works by John Holt, Pat Farenga, Matt Hern and John Taylor Gatto, I have been taking a long look back at the road I’ve traveled and the key developmental experiences that have contributed the most to who I am today. Though I went to school (K-12 & college, some 20 years worth!), my school experience contributes relatively little to who I really am today, and

I'm nowhere near gifted enough with language to describe the abject expression on the face of Daniel Biss today when I magically appeared at his fundraiser at Senator Heather Steans' house in Andersonville.  I snapped this photo shortly after he recovered,  but you can still detect a bit of wtf on his face.

I asked him if he wanted to take a few questions on film and he said, "No, thanks."

Biss was having a bit of a fundraiser at the northside home of Senator Heather Steans, for whom I have voted in the past. It was a typical quiet funding event, not on anyone's calendar and not for public consumption, clearly. I stood out front like a stalker and snapped pictures of people until even I realized how creepy that was. I had lovely interactions with Senator Steans' husband, who was evidently doing a mental health check (mine), and from the mayor's guy, who asked me, "Sun-Times or Tribune?" several times until the word "freelancer" finally

Join with thousands of CTU members for a huge membership meeting, to be followed by a short march and rally downtown. CTU Officers will share important bargaining updates and our members will have important decisions to make.

If we don’t come together and fight for good schools and a fair contract, we will lose many of the rights we currently have. If we allow CPS to continue to disrespect our profession, they will pile on even more demand on our schools without any resources. Every year they come after more- enough is enough. We are fighting to save public education!

An outdoor overflow rally will include speeches by officers, labor and community leaders, parents, and students, along with musical performances.
