Modern School: Helping SPED Students by Increasing Their Class Sizes?

Modern School: Helping SPED Students by Increasing Their Class Sizes?:

Helping SPED Students by Increasing Their Class Sizes?

Full Inclusion or Full Immersion? (Image from Flickr, by Gui Seiz)
One of the latest trends in Special Education is “Full Inclusion.” The idea is that all students benefit from being in the “least restrictive” environment. Special day classes (SDC)—where many special needs students were traditionally exposed to much of their curriculum—segregated them from the general student population and relied on special education (SPED) teachers who were not necessarily credentialed in the subjects which they were teaching.

Many schools are now placing these same students in regular education classes (e.g., science, English, social studies, math). In California, this means they are sometimes in classes with 35-38 students. In the past, most SDC students would have been in small classes of 7-14 students, with a SPED teacher and another 1-3

Mulgrew spells conditions for backing college loan forgiveness

The UFT would consider supporting Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to pay back the loans of top college graduates who become city teachers — but only under certain conditions.
In a letter to Chancellor Dennis Walcott today, UFT President Michael Mulgrew spelled out what it would take for him to support a loan forgiveness program of the type Bloomberg proposed in January during his State of the City address. At the time, Bloomberg said the city would give teachers in the “top tier” of their college class $25,000 to repay their loans. A Department of Education spokeswoman said Bloomberg’s proposal would likely apply to students in the top quarter of their class.
Other proposals Bloomberg made at the time — closing and reopening 33 struggling schools, increasing the salaries of teachers who earn high ratings in a new evaluation system — immediately drew union censure. But Mulgrew did not dismiss the loan forgiveness proposal.
In today’s letter, he explains what it would take to bring the union on board. The program should be focused as

Department of Justice will not be present at meeting to discuss racial bias in hiring and firing of teachers Denver's far northeast
DenverPost.com
The U.S. Department of Justice this morning said it is neither hosting nor will it send a representative to a meeting planned for 6:30 p.m. tonight at Green Valley Ranch Recreation Center where the issue of the hiring and firing of minority teachers in far northeast Denver will be discussed.
Late last week, e-mail messages spread inviting current and former Denver Public Schools employees to discuss "racial bias concerns about DPS delivery of educational services" at the meeting.
One of the e-mail messages, from retired teacher and former chairwoman of the Black Caucus for the Denver Classroom Teachers Association Annette Sills-Brown, said the meeting was organized by retired DPS teacher Cozette Hammock-West.
In the message, Sills-Brown said Hammock-West was "asked by a DOJ attorney to schedule a meeting on Monday, March 19th so that attorney and one other colleague can hear from current and former DPS persons with racial bias concerns about DPS delivery of
