If Alexander Russo had penned this near April 1, instead of January 1, and ended with "April Fools!" I would have enjoyed the irony, but instead, Russo appears serious with "Media: Reform Opponents Are Winning Online (For Now)."

The list of problems with this post are extensive, but a few major points include: (1) The educators and scholars Russo identifies as "Goliaths" are not against reform, but against corporate reform that perpetuates the status quo, (2) The status quo is not being propped up by the educators and scholars Russo identifies, but by the so-called Davids (Gates, Duncan, Rhee), (3) The Davids have billions of dollars, political clout, and popular assumptions on their side (odd dynamics to be an underdog), and (4) Russo ironically reflects what is seriously

Teachers appear once more on youtube singing about Common Core standards. This version from South Dakota is described as a...Blues song written collaboratively by Scott Simpson and South Dakota 9-12 English Language Arts teachers working on disaggregating and implementing the new Common Core State Standards.

According to the song, teachers have the "Common Core Blues", feel stressed out and confused, but ultimately, they know the standards are the answer to educational woes.

Read the lyrics and remember, teachers, taxpayers and students have been sold out by the politicians, unions and special interests to get these standards adopted. As professionals, teachers should be rising up and refusing to be trained in unproven,

It’s been a while since I last blogged here — part of the reason is that I didn’t feel I can contribute as much in the efforts to change education as the rest of my Coop friends, but part was my feeling I need to focus on my family and my own health after the crazy hours put in the making of TEDxKids@BC back in September. The time I had for myself have been burdened with lots of questions about life, my own parenting skills, the value I hope to bring up my two daughters with, the mentorship support I want to provide to the youth I am working with as part of the TEDxKids@BC team, etc. With this post I hope to ask some of those questions to my Coop friends and readers as I feel a dire need to start answering some of them before going crazy!

Illinois finally crossed the finish line first in the latest “Race to the Top” competition for federal education grants, a cornerstone of the Obama administration’s reform agenda.

After coming up empty-handed three times in a row, the state was awarded $42.8 million from the United States Department of Education last week in a fourth round of Race to the Top. It was the largest grant given in a race that essentially guaranteed everyone would be a winner.

Nine states were eligible for a portion of the $200 million left in the Race to the Top pot because they were finalists in previous rounds of the competition. They were asked to submit a budget plan and an application that reiterated their commitment to raising academic standards, turning around low performing schools, improving teacher and principal evaluations and enhancing student data tracking systems. South Carolina did not apply
