    Who thought it was a good idea to send ATR teachers from school to school from week to week? How does that help anyone? The stories I'm hearing and seeing would be beyond belief it it weren't for the fact that, under such an agreement, they were virtually inevitable.

    A female ATR was instructed to do secretarial duties. For those unfamiliar with the concept of contract (for example, the administrators who issued this instruction) secretarial duties are to be performed bysecretaries. The teacher declined, saying she was a teacher and wanted to teach. The administrator's conclusion?

    "This is why none of you guys are able to get a job."

    How outrageous that a teacher would want to do her job. Another ATR was instructed to do hallway duty. He

    The mayor and his Broad Academy-trained CEO,J.C. Brizard, are trying to take a page from the Broad play book -- merit pay for principals.

    But Rahm's divide-and-conquer strategies seem to be backfiring. I give him credit for one thing. He appears to have succeeded in doing what I thought couldn't be done -- uniting the city's teachers and principals against him and his top-down, corporate-style reform model.

    I’m not sure how many teachers are retiring with me in June.

    It’s the third year of our three-year collective bargaining agreement. There are some bargained perks for those who choose to retire during the life of this contract. It’s a good deal for the board since those of us higher up on the salary schedule will be replaced with new lower-paid teachers.

    Since nobody knows if those retirement perks will be in the next CBA, a higher than usual number of teachers are expected to join me as members of IEA-Retired.

    What it saves the district in money, it will cost the district in knowledge and experience. Hundreds of years of experience.

    The New Teacher Project (TNTP) just released a “fact sheet” on value-added (VA) analysis. I’m all for efforts to clarify complex topics such as VA, and, without question, there is a great deal of misinformation floating around on this subject, both “pro-” and “anti-.”

    The fact sheet presents five sets of “myths and facts.” Three of the “myths” seem somewhat unnecessary: that there’s no research behind VA; that teachers will be evaluated based solely on test scores; and that VA is useless because it’s not perfect. Almost nobody believes or makes these arguments (at least in my experience). But I guess it never hurts to clarify.

    In contrast, the other two are very common arguments, but they are not myths. They are serious issues with concrete policy implications. If there are any myths, they’re in the “facts” column.

    The first objection – that the models aren’t “fair to teachers who work in high-needs schools, where students tend to lag far behind academically” – is a little confusing. In one sense, it’s correct to point out that value-added

    The Oakland school board holds a special meeting Nov. 21 to hear eight pending charter petitions — three district schools that would secede from OUSD and run independently; one new school and four existing charters that are up for renewal (KIPP Bridge, Civicorps, ARISE High School and Aspire’s Lionel Wilson College Prep).

    After 37 years in education policy, I can recognize a golden opportunity for our schools when I see one. California is staring at one right now, and it should take it.

    Earlier this year U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the third phase in the Race to the Top competition. Race to the Top is a grant program born out of the stimulus legislation passed in 2009 to spark innovation and high performance in states. This latest round of applications will provide states like California, which applied for earlier rounds but did not ultimately win, with the opportunity to receive federal funding. California should apply for this third phase of funding.
