    Jason Glass, the director of the Iowa Department of Education, gave a speech to School Administrators from across the state. What he said in his speech (of which he transcribed his remarks on his blog) I could mostly agree. We agree on the question – “can our schools be better than they are today?” I’m in wholehearted agree with him that yes they can.

    I agree that educator quality must improve, and that “innovation must become an institution.” I also applaud Director Glass for taking the time to listen to those around the state about how education in Iowa can best be improved and for allowing a free market of ideas. I also agree with his desire to reform educator pay.

    And the agreement stops when he said:

    Let me preface any “plan” that we might design with the notion that Iowa must move from being a fractured system of schools to being a school system. For too long we have left too much to chance that each individual school district would provide a world class education to each and every

    Gov. Jerry Brown and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson have made high-profile appointments to a troubled state agency, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

    Torlakson has assigned his Chief Deputy Superintendent, Richard Zeiger, as his designee to keep a close eye on the commission. Brown this week nominated Stanford University School of Education Professor Linda Darling-Hammond as one of a half-dozen of his Commission appointees.     When it was announced that this year’s Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) conference was going to be in Portland OR, I decided I would go, and rather than fly to Portland, I would take the train up the coast. I had journeyed back east to previous AERO conferences in 2007 and 2008 in Albany NY, but had not been able to attend the past two years. And this go round, Sally decided she would come too.

    So our train was three hours late arriving in Van Nuys where we boarded, but once we were on the train and soon headed up the central California coast, it was “all good” as they say. So we spent the night in our cozy little
