And you might have a similar honor roll of those who spurred, inspired, lured, intrigued, goaded, and otherwise motivated you to do more than you might otherwise have done -- a list of your special public school teachers. The junior-high, senior-high, and college teachers on my list largely sparked my lifelong interests in language, history, politics, and how (and for whom) government really works.

(CNN) -- Should your ZIP code determine your access to the American dream? Or is the U.S. Constitution's guarantee to provide "equal protection" a principle we have silently agreed to uphold in theory -- but not in practice?

I'm starting to wonder after reading about Tanya McDowell, the Connecticut mother facing felony charges for lying on her 5-year-old son's registration forms so he could attend a better school. McDowell's story is painfully reminiscent of Kelley Williams-Bolar, the Ohio mother who made a similar choice earlier this year -- and is now a convicted felon.

These two stories of civil disobedience come against the backdrop of an ongoing national conversation about our public school system -- and how it must be improved. CollegeWeekLive hosts CALIFORNIA DAY

The online showcase of colleges and universities, called "CollegeWeekLive," is hosting CALIFORNIA DAY on May 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. Students, parents, and guidance counselors may log in to the event to connect with admissions representatives and current college students from the convenience of a personal computer. Prospective students may explore unique characteristics of the participating colleges, including admissions, academics, athletics, financial aid, and campus housing. Attendees can also participate in live video Webcam sessions with current college students from different colleges to get a more informal take on campus life. Pertussis Vaccination Requirement

A new state law requires students entering or advancing to grades seven through twelve in the 2011–12 school year to be immunized with a pertussis vaccine booster called Tdap. The new requirement goes into effect July 1, 2011, for one year and affects all students—current, new, and transfers—in public and private schools.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious disease that can be debilitating at any age and lethal to infants. The pertussis epidemic has caused disease in more than 9,000 people in 2010 and persists today. Pertussis infections occur year-round, but typically peak over the summer and fall, causing widespread illness and absenteeism in students and school staff. The charter-school movement faces a big problem: Advocates want it to keep expanding, but there’s a shortage of effective leaders. Although people have long bemoaned the pool of candidates to lead public schools, the problem has risen in prominence in the charter-school sector.

Indeed, in reporting for a Washington Post article about charter school leadership in Washington, D.C., I heard from a number of experts that the difficulty of recruiting, training and retaining high-quality leaders was one of the biggest threats—if not the biggest threat—to the movement’s ultimate success.

This week, the Center for American Progress released a report, “Preparing for Growth: Human Capital Innovations in Charter Public Schools,” which looks at the strategies used by six charter management organizations, or CMOs, to ensure they have sufficient numbers of high-quality teachers and leaders for continued expansion.

It’s spring, and time for the Triple Crown. But I do not mean in horse racing.

Rather, at Federal Hocking Secondary School it is time for the academic Triple Crown for our seniors.

The first of the three, our Graduation Portfolio presentation, took place last Friday, the day before the Kentucky Derby. Each senior stood before a panel of faculty and defended the portfolio that they had assembled demonstrating their readiness to graduate.

The first section of the portfolio was their plan for after high school, complete with college or job acceptance letters, resumes, letters of reference and their own agenda for life after high school.

Those of you in and around schools have noticed that it’s been increasingly challenging to try to keep students until graduation over the last few years.

Drop-out rates in many states have soared to their highest levels since the mid-1990’s.
The continuing increase in families living in or near the poverty level has been a major factor, exacerbated by almost a decade of on-going budget cuts at the school and district levels and the migration of services away from much-needed social/emotional supports to more purely “academic” programming, i.e., core subjects that will be tested. Enforcement of "zero-tolerance" policies has prematurely pushed struggling students out of schools and into the juvenile justice system.

Over the past 9 years of the NCLB orgy of tabulation, public schools with large numbers of poor children have been subjected to unceasing public scorn, expensive and worthless corporate tutoring interventions, and conversion to corporate charter school status without public oversight. These alterations to public schooling in America have been enabled by school testing policies that effectively identify those poor schools by using tests and testing targets that reliably rank schools according to family income and wealth. (There is no state where test scores do not reliably reflect the wealth of the community that schools serve.)

With almost no exceptions, the poorest children reside, of course, in communities with the lowest tax revenues, which correlates, then, to neglected school facilities, lower salaries for teachers who struggle there, and weaker learning resources that mirror the economic disadvantages of the surrounding community. Poor parents, then, become ripe pickings for Business Roundtable reformers with their only alternative to malignantly neglected schools with overcrowded classrooms: corporate charter schools that reflect a commitment to free-market

The approval of the education reform bill by the Washington State Senate in support of laying off teachers based on “performance evaluations” brings a critical issue back into the public conversation: In the midst of drastic cuts to public education, standardized tests are too inaccurate to be used in determining teacher layoffs.

On the surface, the logic of using tests to evaluate teachers seems like commonsense: The more effective a teacher is, the better his or her students will do on state tests.

Supporters of using standardized tests to evaluate teachers continually remind us that teachers play an important role in student achievement. Many of us instinctively know this to be true, and the research supports this position.

However, just because teachers contribute to student achievement does not mean teachers are solely responsible for how a student performs on a standardized test, nor does it mean we can equate effective
