Margaret Spellings, an architect of the No Child Left Behind Act during the Bush administration, is now pushing for the landmark education law’s renewal on behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Rather than retreating from some of the law’s more controversial provisions, Spellings and the Chamber want to strengthen them. All schools, not just the lowest-performing, should meet tough federal standards, she said, and receive sanctions if they fail to measure up.

Spellings’s efforts put the Chamber in an unusual position for a group that prides itself on crusading for a less-instrusive

Some things, as we sometimes find out after the fact, are not always what they originally seemed. That may be the case at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, where President Obama is delivering the commencement address today.

The school won the administration’s Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, in which hundreds of schools competed to win an Obama apperance by showing how they have worked to increase their graduation rates and improve student achievement. Obama picked the winner himself from three finalists chosen by the public.

How much control should donors to colleges and universities over who gets hired with their money?

That’s the question at issue in a new controversy over an arrangement in which Florida State University accepted $1.5 million from the extremely conservative Charles Koch Charitable Foundation to endow two faculty chairs. Koch, one of the world’s wealthiest men, funds libertarian and conservative causes with his brother, David.

According to a story in The St. Petersburg Times, which first reported the story, the foundation gave the money to further studies into “political economy and free enterprise.” As part of the deal, an advisory committee was created, with members approved by Koch, which could decide which candidates could be considered. In the first round of hiring, the paper said, nearly 60 percent of candidates put forth by faculty were rejected though two were later approved.

It’s a measure of how worried and angry people are that nearly a hundred parents, students, educators, and policy makers gave up their Saturday to learn just how badly schools will be hit under Gov. Brown’s all-cuts budget, due out today, and to discuss some of the not-so popular solutions. Hoi Yung Poon, executive director and founder of Parents for Great Education, who organized the event, worried needlessly that “no one would show up.” The 21st Century Education Summit at De Anza College in Cupertino drew Silicon Valley Congressman Mike Honda and San Francisco Assessor Phil Ting. A group of Chinese American moms drove down from San Francisco with an interpreter, a parent organizer came up from Los Angeles, and a community college trustee flew in from Orange County.

Governor Andrew Cuomo looked like a good guy when he opposed the ridiculous anti-seniority legislation that Bloomberg and his lackeys tried to ram through the State Legislature. But he's the first Democrat I ever voted against, and there are good reasons for that. Who the hell needs a Democrat who publicly declares he will go after unions, while declining to continue a tax on millionaires?

We've all been waiting for him to let his hair down, and it looks like the time has come. The UFT was party to a negotiation that resulted in a new evaluation method for teachers. This was supposed to be 20% from "value-added," or student test results, 20% from some sort of local evaluation, and 60% from observation and so forth. I was not happy with this as there is quite a bit of evidence that "value added" methodology has no validity to begin with. And with an preposterous margin of error, and clear evidence that good teachers can be labeled otherwise, it seems to me it ought not to be used at all.

I sent the following email to the NYS Board of Regents regarding their vote today on the use of high-stakes standardized tests to account for 40% of teachers evals despite tremendous research indicating how damaging this will be. I encourage others to do the same:

Dear Board of Regents members,

My name is Mark Friedman. I am an educator in Rochester, NY and an active community organizer. I urge you tomorrow to not vote in favor of having student scores on standardized tests, derived from flawed value-added formulas to account for 40 percent of teachers’ evaluations. According to Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, Mr. Obama has told Democrats not to draw any “line in the sand” in debt negotiations. Well, count me among those who find this strategy completely baffling. At some point — and sooner rather than later — the president has to draw a line. Otherwise, he might as well move out of the White House, and hand the keys over to the Tea Party.

That is the final paragraph of Krugman's NY Times op ed today, America Held Hostage.

Lest anyone doubt the accuracy of this statement, let me point you at the first paragraph of the same op ed:

Six months ago President Obama faced a hostage situation. Republicans threatened to block an extension of middle-class tax cuts unless Mr. Obama gave in and extended tax cuts for the rich too. And the president essentially folded, giving the G.O.P. everything it wanted.

Last year’s Education Nation programming on NBC was widely panned by most teachers whose opinions I read or heard. The heavy-hands of corporate sponsorship and foundation funding showed through in the design of the event, the selection of topics and guests, and the focus on a single and simplified narrative about public schools. My colleague Anthony Cody was not alone in seeing the event as part of a broader media “war on teachers.”

This year, Education Nation is back and NBC is taking it on the road. The only portion I’ve seen so far was today’s Los Angeles Teacher Town Hall, which was a webcast rather than a television broadcast. I was prepared to be disappointed, but due to the involvement of some friends, and friends of friends, I decided to watch and listen. The two-hour program covered many of the key issues in education, with a bit of a California focus to start, but overall, tackling the major issues in the national education debate. In short, I’d say that NBC and Education Nation took an important step towards redeeming their reputation among teachers. I don’t pretend to speak for other teachers, but I think I have a reasonable sense of how certain ideas and issues resonate among my peers, and how the presentation of those issues is likely to trigger certain responses.
