Daily Kos: The Zinn Education Project - continuing the work

The Zinn Education Project - continuing the work

"He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future."

It seems appropriate to begin with those famous words by George Orwell, because to me they explain the importance of the life and work of Howard Zinn, best known for his A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present. That work was far from his only significant historical writing, nor did his productivity end when it was published in 1980.

His life and his work offered a different way of perceiving our history, one that was far more critical than traditional American histories, and thus far more honest.

The Zinn Education Project is the result of someone who wishes to remain anonymous, who after seeing the biographical film on Zinn, You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train, wanted to get Zinn's work more widely known and more widely used. Zinn, whose lectures he had attended while at Boston U in the 1970s, put him touch withRethinking Schools and Teaching for Change (two organizations all progressives should support), and the Zinn Education Project is the result.

Republicans New Welfare Queens: The Unemployed

For years unemployment has worked wonderfully. That was until the Great Recession, where deregulation and Wall Street excesses tanked the U.S. and global economies.

The economic shock saw U.S. employers shed nearly 8 million American workers.

A horrified uncertain public panicked, first voting in Democrats who didn’t act fast enough, and later the repentant Republicans who caused this mess.

Big mistake. Republicans have always thought of the unemployed as something akin to the welfare queens of the past, sitting on fat weekly checks, talking on cell phones and buying plasma TV’s.

A hush fell over the crowd filling the elegant hall in downtown Richmond, Va. The vote was about to be announced, and a young staffer of the Museum of the Confederacy balanced his laptop across his knees, poised to get out the news as soon as it was official.

Who would be chosen "Person of the Year, 1861"?

Five historians had made impassioned nominations, and the audience would now decide.

Most anywhere else, the choice would be obvious. Who but Abraham Lincoln? But this was a vote in the capital of the rebellion that Lincoln put down,

As my Spring Break winds down to this last weekend, the temperature might hit 50. All week it has been cold, windy with even a little rain. All that was missing was snow.

I’m being punished for not leaving town.

The Cub’s opening day was yesterday. But Wrigley won’t see this blogger until late May when the Dodgers come to town. Baseball is a summer game. You shouldn’t have to wear a parka. The only ones who should be wearing gloves are the guys on the field.

This week there are events all across the nation honoring Dr. King on the anniversary of his murder in Memphis

Pay-4-Performance: Individual vs. Group Incentives

Schools are identified as failures under No Child Left Behind. Turning around a school may include firing the staff or even closing the school. In short, the school is the unit for punishing failure.

And that is smart because when it comes to determining failure policymakers understand that schools are collectives of adults and children where structures and group cultures have an enormous influence on what individual teachers and students do. They also recognize that schools are interdependent units of teachers–the 4th grade teacher depends upon the kindergarten through third grade teachers to prepare her students for the work that her 10 year-olds will be doing. Similarly, high school physics teachers depend upon 9th grade math

Cheating on Roast Beef Sandwiches, Cheating on Standardized Tests: Lessons from D.C. under Michelle Rhee

When I was about 19, I worked as a cook at a fast-food restaurant chain. Their roast beef sandwiches were advertised as having four ounces of roast beef in them. Did they? Well, the loaves of raw beef that were sent to our restaurant were 10 pounds each. Now, 10 pounds divided by four ounces equals 40 roast-beef sandwiches, right? Not so fast. They actually weighed less when they came out of the oven, due to water loss. The central office was apparently concerned by this loss of “meat,” because they put pressure on all the restaurants to keep

No April Fools’ joke. IEA circulates anti-MEA faux news.

I receive the IEA education news digest as email.

Yesterday’s edition contained this link under “National News”: Mich. Teachers Assoc. Features Photo of Gov. Snyder as Devil on Facebook Page

There’s so much that is wrong about this.

The link is not to a news item. It is a blog post by an anti-union blogger. The anti-union blogger wrote his post based on a story that appeared in Michigan Capitol Confidential which is published by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. It is less of a news source than Fox and has the real news credibility of Steven Colbert. The Mackinac Center itself has been in the news lately for using FOIA requests of the emails of professors at Michigan universities who teach labor studies, looking for emails that contain the words, “Madison,” “Wisconsin,”
