NH city schools to remind teachers about Facebook

MANCHESER, N.H.—Teachers and administrators in New Hampshire's largest city are going to be warned about what they post to social networking sites such as Facebook and to avoid online contact with students.

The policy being proposed by Manchester Superintendent Thomas Brennan would prohibit teachers from inviting students to be "friends" on social networking sites or agreeing to student friend requests.

In a couple of weeks, some students will be logging on for the first day of classes—instead of walking into school—as cyber schools take in more area students every year.

With each passing school year, cyber charter schools are becoming a bigger business across the state and U.S. The result is an increased cost for school districts, which fund a student's enrollment in the schools. The state reimburses a portion of those costs.

Tuscarora School District Business Manager Eric Holtzman said each regular education student that enrolls in cyber charter schools costs the district about $6,668 and special education students can cost around $14,000. About 30 percent of the costs for students that attend cyber schools are reimbursed by the state.

Last week's revelations about the high prices, uneven performance and shady marketing practices of for-profit universities have now cast a dark cloud over what had been the fastest-growing segment of higher education.

WASHINGTON – Texas would have to preserve its current education spending levels through 2013 to qualify for more than $830 million in federal aid under a Texas-specific provision signed into law Tuesday by President Barack Obama.

The mandate passed the House on Tuesday afternoon as part of a $26 billion jobs protection bill, despite strong opposition from TexasRepublicans. Several said the amendment unfairly singled out the state and jeopardized its ability to receive the funds.

"This is another example of President Obama and the Democratic leadership messing with Texas," said Rep. Joe Barton , R-Arlington.

If federal officials don't waive key rules, several of the state's largest school districts are at risk of not getting one penny of a nearly $416 million grant to turn around struggling campuses.

According to an Aug. 10 letter sent to the U.S. Department of Education, state officials are asking federal authorities to reconsider the rule requiring California to put 25 percent of its $415,844,376 away for next year – which equates to roughly $100 million.
