State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Announces Educational Resources, Activities for 2017 CDE Digital Citizenship Week

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today that the California Department of Education (CDE), the California State Library, and Common Sense Media will celebrate Digital Citizenship Week January 23 to 27 and provide educational resources to students, teachers, and parents.
“More than ever, it is crucial that our students and their families have the knowledge and tools to safely navigate the digital world we live in today,” Torlakson said. “The CDE and our partners have put together a curriculum of instruction addressing online security, privacy, cyberbullying, sourcing, verifying news sources, and other ways to make smart, safe, and ethical digital choices.”
The Digital Citizenship Weekly Plan is available on the CDE Web site. The curriculum teaches students to think critically about what they choose to post and share about themselves online, how to give credit and use the work of others appropriately and avoid plagiarism, and illustrates the dynamics and impacts of online cruelty and cyberbullying.
Digital Citizenship Week will conclude on Friday, January 27, with a panel discussion at CDE’s Sacramento headquarters among Torlakson and students from Natomas Charter School on the issues and impact of the digital world on their lives. The press and public are invited to attend the event, which begins at 10 a.m. in the State Board of Education Room.
More information on the 2017 Digital Citizenship Week is available at CDE’s Digital Citizenship Week Web page. The 2017 CDE Digital Citizenship Week follows the recommendations in the California Education Technology Blueprint, published in 2014 and titled “Empowering Learning” (PDF). Recommendation No. 2 states: “Ensure student safety by outlining policies and best practices to prevent cyberbullying and protect student data.”
