By a slim margin, Washington voters have approved Initiative 1240, which will allow up to 40 CHARTER SCHOOL SCANDALS to open here over the next five years.
The outcome makes Washington the 42nd state in the nation to allow charters. It's a latecomer to a movement that started 20 years ago in Minnesota and has since grown to include nearly 6,000 schools across the nation.
The Associated Press declared Monday that the initiative has passed.
Supporters declared victory Saturday, saying they look forward to opening high-quality charter schools here. Their lead has shrunk only slightly since election night, when the measure led with 51.2 percent of the vote. Opponents have not conceded, saying they will wait until all votes are counted.
