Kevin Johnson wants to strengthen mayor's position

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson on Wednesday will reveal a renewed effort to increase the power of the mayor position by amending the city’s charter, hoping to garner enough support from the city council to put the issue to voters on the June ballot next year.
Johnson’s plan includes additional checks and balances that were not included when he attempted to reform city government shortly after taking office three years ago.
His staff has even shied away from using the term “strong mayor” this time and are calling the plan calls for an “executive mayor”
