Some good reads:

• "Critical Contributions: Philanthropic Investment in Teaching and Testing," by Claire Suggs of Kronley & Associates and Kathleen deMarrais of the University of Georgia, with help from Karen Watkins, Arthur Horne, Kate Swett and Robert Kronley.
• America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2011 Warning: depressing statistics abound.
• Nicholas Kristof, who generally seems unfortunately receptive to much of the current education reform craze, writes about the cuts to his "beloved old high school" in tiny Yamhill, Oregon. "We're starting to eviscerate education," one superintendent told him.
• Poke around over at ALEC Exposed, particularly the education section. If you're not familiar with ALEC, the "What is ALEC?" page is a great summary. Until now, you had to be a member of ALEC to access their model language.
