Liz Robbins of the New York Times describes some of the brutality of segregation even when it is ostensibly done by choice. Most of Radcliffe's classmates celebrated, while others cried, as they learned whether they were accepted at the high schools of their choice. Radcliff held his feelings in, however, until he could cry in his bedroom. Middle School students who are not in a position to exercise choice may or may not drop tears, but they are just as sensitive about their status.
