De-professionalizing Public Schools During Covid-19: The Problem with Bill Gates’s Projects

Many fear that the Gates Foundation is using this pandemic to end public education once and for all. De-professionalizing schools is an excellent way to do it. Covid-19 has made it easier for venture philanthropists to de-professionalize public education.
Great public schools require staffing with professionals who attend real universities and study the profession they practice. Public schools are not charities. They must not rely on young people who look at temporarily serving schools like joining the Peace Corps.
During this pandemic, it’s not a good move for schools to use online novices to replace professionals, but this is becoming a worrisome trend.
Bill Gates argues that high school students need college and career advisement during this difficult time. To his and his foundation’s credit, they’ve provided students with college scholarships. But his foundation is not supportive of public education, as most know.
Mr. Gates is now using the college message to fund nonprofits that will provide an CONTINUE READING: De-professionalizing Public Schools During Covid-19: The Problem with Bill Gates’s Projects

Something doesn't add up CARES edition

So the CARES act was designed to help schools set up and be safe during the Pandemic.

Detroit a school system about 2/3rds our size received 85 million.

I know we spent 4 million on screens, 200k on masks and I am sure that the bottle of hand sanitizer I received wasn't free but according to my calculations and I am no math major we are still a long way from 85 million.

By June 30th we had only spent 10 million dollars.

I Know You: My Short Portrait of Trump Supporters

I know you. You can't watch sports on television without feeling enraged, whether it is from athletes taking a knee during the national anthem, the proliferation of Black Lives Matter shirts and signs at sports events, or the Modelo Beer ads praising the heroism of Latino immigrants. You can't even turn on ESPN anymore because of all the talk about racial oppression and social justice, Your children's schools are becoming places where white kids are the minority. You worry about their safety, and about the rising tax bill you have to pay for extra services for recent immigrants. You look at the Democratic ticket and think it is a set up to make a Black Woman President some time in the next five years, and feel the clock is ticking for white people in the United States. You look at the thousands of Black Lives Matter protests around the country, some of them leading to disorder and fear the country is descending into anarchy The only time you feel good about the country is when you see Donald Trump speaking to you on television, or read his tweets. And you will do anything in your power to make sure he stays president, because everywhere you look, you see threats to your family and your children's future.

Betsy DeVos: Still Hoping to Divert CARES Act $$ to Private Schools

US ed sec Betsy DeVos’ first love is private school choice, and her second love is trying to slice off funding intendend for public education in favor of her first love.
Keep that in mind as you read.
On August 28, 2020, US ed sec Betsy DeVos did an interview with the Wharton Business Daily. Only 90 seconds of the interview is available for listening free of charge, which Wharton introduces thus:
During a special edition of SiriusXM Business Radio’s “Wharton Business Daily”, United States Secretary Of Education, Betsy DeVos, talks to Show Host, Dan Loney, about the positive changes to America’s education system that the COVID-19 pandemic will force.
Below are DeVos’ words in those 90 seconds, trascribed as follows:
We highly value education as a nation, and, again, I think the last six months have really revealed the fact that the system that most students have been a part of has been a very static, one-size-fits-all system that is unable in way too many cases to pivot, to be nimble and flexible and to adjust to new and different circumstances. And, I think this [the pandemic] is a good thing because I think its going to really force changes that should have happened many years ago, and most of that’s going to happen when families themselves are empowered to make those choices and those changes and those decisions.
And I think about a really important bill that’s been introduced now in both houses of Congress, called “School Choice Now,” which would help families who are more vulnerable and don’t have the resources that many better-off families have had to go and make these decisions on what’s best for their child. This would empower many other families to be able to do CONTINUE READING: Betsy DeVos: Still Hoping to Divert CARES Act $$ to Private Schools | deutsch29

Do You Want To Write In Ed Week About Your Teaching Experience This Year?
As you may know, my Education Week column is set up so readers send in questions to me, and then I invite guests to contribution 400- or 500-word responses, as well as printing shorter reader comments. I know a lot of educators, and, in fact, many have already contributed responses to questions for the fall. However, there are a far greater number of talented educators I do not know. I’m adding s
