DREAM ACT Call to Action Jose Antonio Vargas Mentoring Challenge - Hispanically Speaking News
DREAM ACT Call to Action by Jose Antonio Vargas garners Mentoring Challenge
Urgent, national challenge to address Latino educational attainment deficit ties directly to need for passage of the DREAM Act; call to action for an educated America to return to number one spot by 2020 requires DREAMers to become college graduates too; Olga Milan-Howells, real-estate developer of San Francisco heeds call
After hearing the shocking news of Pulitzer Prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas’ coming out about his immigration status, California author and entrepreneur Graciela Tiscareño-Sato decided to push her call for the “Two by 2020 Mentoring Challenge” harder than ever. The challenge asks college-educated Americans to commit to mentoring two young people for the next nine years, with a special focus on Latino youth. This includes assisting a high school or college dropout you may know to complete their education.
Why the urgency? By 2020, America needs 36 million new college graduates to become the most educated nation on Earth; because of rapid population growth, 5.5 million of those degrees must come from the Latino community—611,000 per year. This means America needs Latino high school students, including those that are DREAMers, to also graduate from college. “Active, intentional, long-term mentoring is the only way that a kid

Review: Profit At the Bottom Of The Ladder
Since coming back from Netroots Nation, I have been thinking a lot about workers’ rights. When did we get to the point in our country that workers like teachers and union members are the greedy and grubby ones? No one seems to care that much about the investors who don’t have to work, for example. Or asking the CEO to take a pay cut, or even worse, pay more in taxes. Gasp!
Finally, I spotted a story, in this case the Washington Post, scrutinizing CEO pay, which is at the highest levels in our history. Read on:
The evolution of executive grandeur — from very comfortable to jet-setting — reflects one of the primary reasons that the gap between those with the highest incomes and everyone else is widening.
For years, statistics have depicted growing income disparity in the United

A key area of confusion in some articles is the very different way that federal loans (FFEL, DL and Perkins) are handled from the way that private educational loans are handled. Unlike your articles, the mainstream press doesn't usually specify whether a debtor is trying to discharge a private loan or a federally-related loan. In general, for the private
Jersey Jazzman: "Overpaid Teachers"
"Overpaid Teachers"
U.S. census data shows that annual pay for teachers has fallen drastically over the past 60 years when compared to the annual pay of other workers with college degrees. According to a recent study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the average national starting salary for a teacher is around $30,377. But the study showed that other college graduates entering professions that require similar training and responsibilities start at much higher salaries. For example, public accountants start at $44,668; computer programmers start at an average of $43,635; and registered nurses start at about $45,570. The average earnings of workers with at least four years of college are now more than 50% higher than the average earnings of a teacher. And in addition to starting salaries being lower, inflation has grown faster than the increases in teachers’ salaries each year. Over the past year, inflation increased 3.1%, while teachers’ salaries increased by only 2.3%.
Because teachers do not work a 9 to 5 job and do not work the familiar full-year schedule that most professionals have, many people think that teachers are well-paid when compared to other

Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge Prosser Grabbed Fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley Around The Neck In An Argument In Her Chambers Last Week
By Bill Lueders, Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism Updated: June 25, 2011
Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser allegedly grabbed fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley around the neck in an argument in her chambers last week, according to at least three knowledgeable sources.
Details of the incident, investigated jointly by Wisconsin Public Radio and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, remain sketchy. The sources spoke on the condition that they not be named, citing a need to preserve professional relationships.
They say an argument that occurred before the court’s release of a decision upholding a bill to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employees culminated in a physical altercation in the presence of other

What I Do
From what I have gathered, most of the educators here are in K-12. The others are tech people or consultants who work with K-12 schools. I am neither.
I started my career in youth development, leading after-school and summer programs. Now, I am a family life educator who specializes in digital and social media. What is family life education? What does a family life educator do? I didn’t know myself until I took a course on the subject in completing my second bachelor’s in Child and Family Studies.
Family life education is an informative, educational approach to assisting individuals in living authentic and productive lives. Utilizing a family systems perspective, most family life educational programming takes place in a classroom-style kind of setting and can even be provided through educational materials, such as books,

Budget Deal Removes Teacher Layoff Threat
An agreement reached by New York City and the UFT will ensure that no New York City public school teacher will be laid off in the next year, Mayor Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine Quinn and UFT President Michael Mulgrew announced on June 24.
The agreement with the UFT includes financial savings to the city generated by redeployment of teachers in the Absent Teacher Reserve pool and a one-year suspension of study sabbaticals, along with additional resources from the City Council and the Department of Education.
The agreement forestalls the possibility – raised by Mayor Bloomberg in both the January Financial Plan and the Executive Budget in May – that the city budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2011 would require the
NYC Educator: The Layoff Deal
The Layoff Deal
Obviously, averting layoffs is a good thing. No one can argue with that, except perhaps Mayor4Life and his minions. In fact, it's probably good for him too, as layoffs would prove yet another PR disaster. Should we allow him to endure that at the expense of the teachers who'd be sitting on pins and needles waiting to be called back? That's a tough call. I've lost my teaching job several times, excessed when there was no ATR to fall into, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody.
Now if this simply called for ATRs to be placed in regular teaching positions, that would be a no-brainer. But Gotham Schools says otherwise:
The second concession is that teachers in the Absent Teacher Reserve, or ATR, will be redeployed to fill substitute teaching positions, which are currently filled by teachers who work

Brooklyn Ascend Brought to Earth by Former Teacher, Part 1
Unfortunately, the total compliance and total surveillance model of KIPP has inspired a number of high-flying knock-offs like Brooklyn Ascend and its two sister schools in Brooklyn, which use the familiar chain gang methods to denigrate, demean, and destroy the spirits of kids, all in the twisted and debased name of equal opportunity for children who are captive to poverty. Social justice in blackface is the only adequate way to describe this caricature of equal education.
Little do parents know what goes in these corporate madrassa hellholes, and little did anyone else know until a former teacher stepped forward to call a spade a spade. Her name is Emily Kennedy, and it wasn't until she

In an earlier contribution to the Harvard Futures of School Reform, Richard Elmore described "the dismal, glacial, adult-centered, congenially authoritarian, mindless soup in which our children spend the bulk of their days." I assume he was mostly describing failing schools, that tend to be high-poverty. I wish he had also acknowledged the excellent teaching that occurs in many inner city and lower-poverty classrooms. Elmore was clearly accurate, however, in recounting "how little the monolithic beast of American secondary education has been affected by the bright, high-minded optimism of professional reformers."
In a concluding essay for the Harvard Futures series, Elmore and Elizabeth City wrote, "with rare exceptions, schools currently treat the digital revolution as if it never happened." They then described three possible futures for our public schools. Two of them would be tragic, but it would be an honor for a teacher to participate in a third.

Reflections on the Year in Lab
@whatedsaid Edna Sackson:
My best tip for new year would be to focus on how students learn rather than how you teach. It changed things for me completely #elemchat
I’ve held off doing a final “Week in Lab” post because I just couldn’t figure out how to put into words what had gone wrong this year. I focused on things from my perspective. I was going through the motions, I was on a treadmill just doing what I had done in prior years, etc. Even my husband complained that I wasn’t sharing much about the exciting things I was doing with the kids, as I had in years past.
In my conversations with my husband on this topic, I focused on the things outside of my control that made this situation what it was; too many grown-up dramas in my professional-life, the constraints of being a prep teacher and having so many students for so short a time (~375 in two 45-minute periods a week).
Those were factors, but I thought back to the time before I came to the lab, a very turbulent year, both professionally and personally. That was the year that I broke out with education technology, and started my students blogging, and creating a whole bunch of new instructional approaches. So the adult stuff can’t be all of

Why Incentive Pay for Teachers is a Trojan Horse
The same people who have been promoting incentive and merit pay for teachers are also those who want cuts in taxes and government. The two will never go together, and proponents of the incentive approach know it.
Thursday, newly-elected Oklahoma State Supt. of Schools, Janet Barresi cast the tie-breaking vote that, among other things, ended one of the best National Board Certification incentive programs in the United States.According to the Oklahoma Education Associations website “The NBCT program has made a significant impact in Oklahoma. Oklahoma ranks 9th in the nation for the percentage of NBCTs. As a result of this achievement,
