CORPORATE ED REFORM

Thought Dreams
I’ve nearly completely extricated myself from my daily reading and commenting on Facebook and Twitter. I’m a retired public school teacher. I’ve virtually stopped writing about education and the continuing destruction of our public schools. I live it everyday now as a consultant in the classrooms.   I’ve been traveling a lot over the last few […]

My First Days With Full-blown Common Core
In this post I write about my experience as a traditional public school teacher facing Common Core (CCSS). Before I do so, there are a few statements I must offer. First, let me be clear that I am writing about my own experiences on my own blog using my own computer and sitting in my own home on my own time. Second, I teach in a wonderful school for an administration that cares about their student

Why Should Parents Raise Money to Pay for Common Core Testing?
This comes from Jennifer Croslin Smith, a Tennessee parent and a founder of http://stoptntesting.com/. No more bake sales or raising money for school uniforms. Nope: “We were just told tonight at our Back to School night that our PTO is foregoing raising money for iPads this year so we can instead purchase computers for Common Core testing which will begin in 2014-2015. We are lucky if we raise $

DREAM 9 Immigrant Youth Released from Immigration Detention as They Await Political Asylum
The young immigration activists known as the DREAM 9 were released from Arizona’s Eloy Detention Center pending consideration of their requests for political asylum. Their release came a day after the National Immigrant Youth Alliance said U.S. immigration authorities determined that the activists had grounds to fear persecution if they were returned to Mexico. That decision does not guarantee th

Do We Want A “Community Of Learners” Or A “Classroom Of Students”?
Giving Classrooms A Purpose is the title of an older column I wrote for The Washington Post that summarizes a lesson I do during the first week of the school year. The focus of the lesson is to help students decide if they want to create a community of learners or settle for a classroom of students (I also talk about it a bit in a radio interview I posted earlier today). The complete lesson plan

By Nancy Flanagan on August 8, 2013 8:55 AM Perhaps because Americans as a nation have a gift for organizing, we tend to meet any new situation by reorganization, and a wonderful method it is for creating the illusion of progress at the mere cost of confusion, inefficiency and demoralization. TFA: “It’s just one unverifiable anecdote after the next” – SCHOOLS MATTER @ THE CHALK FACE
AUGUST 8, 2013 BY PLTHOMASEDD While it may be overly optimistic (which I am rarely accused of being) to suggest that the shine is wearing off the Teach for America brand, it is clear that credible challenges to TFA are being acknowledged more often, including resistance from within the organization itself. Lawsuit: Disabled teens kept in solitary confinement, denied educational services | EdSource Today

Lawsuit: Disabled teens kept in solitary confinement, denied educational services | EdSource Today:

A federal class action lawsuit filed by juvenile justice advocates alleges that Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall officials have kept teenagers with disabilities in solitary confinement for up to 100 days and have denied them special education services that the county is legally required to provide. About a third of all students in the county’s Juvenile Hall are estimated to have disabilities.
“Despite knowing that many students have a learning disability, mental illness or other disabilities, Contra Costa County puts students in solitary confinement for behavior that is related to their disabilities, denies them general and special education services and holds them in conditions that can make their disabilities worse,” according to a news release issued by Disability Rights Advocates, Public Counsel and Paul Hastings LLP, the groups that filed the lawsuit.
County officials had not seen the lawsuit and therefore could not comment on it, said Betsy Burkhart, director of communications for Contra Costa County.
The advocates gave the example of W.B., a 17-year-old whose mental disability deteriorated when he was locked in solitary confinement for approximately 90 days. He began talking to himself and

DIARY OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER!: ClassDojo's New Feature: Teacher Collaboration!:

ClassDojo's New Feature: Teacher Collaboration!

One of the many reasons I am such a great fan of ClassDojo is the fact that they listen to feedback from teachers. This latest feature has been one of the most requested by teachers. It was definitely a feature I was interested in!

Teachers can now collaborate! This is exciting because this will eliminate the way collaboration via ClassDojo used to work for me. Let's say I picked up my students from Art. The Art teacher would say, "Could you please give Jane a point for working quietly?" Of course, I would forget by the time I made it back to my classroom.

ClassDojo has added this feature which provides a way to consistently reinforce behaviors.  There are two settings, "full access", and "read only." "Full access" allows for full collaboration, and "read only" allows a teacher or administrator a view of a student's

SacBee Misleads: OC PAC “Hasn’t Spent A Dime on Arena Campaign”

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story. That might be the motto of the Sacramento Bee’s coverage of the Sacramento arena deal.
Last Thursday, the Sacramento Bee featured a scintillating story under the headline, “PAC pushes Sacramento arena vote but won’t say where it is getting money.” The story claimed that Taxpayers for Safer Neighborhoods, an Orange County-based political action committee, had been “working alongside a group of Sacramento activists gathering signatures for a ballot measure that would require voters to approve public subsidies for sports facilities.” According to the Bee’s version of events, the group wouldn’t disclose its funding.
The story of an out-of-town PAC secretly bankrolling the arena measure stirred hundreds of comments on the Bee’s website. It also spawned a formal complaint with the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission. There’s just one problem: It’s completely false.
“The truth is the PAC has $144.50 in the bank and has done absolutely nothing more than lend its name to a press release in support of the Arena vote petition drive,” said James V. Lacy, the principal officer of Taxpayers for Safer Neighborhoods, who also serves as publisher of California Political Review. “The Bee has manufactured this story in a deliberate effort to undermine the public’s right to vote on the arena deal.”
The Bee asked the political action committee to release its donors since July 1, a move that isn’t required by state or federal law. The group declined to share such
