With bursts of humor that had the audience in the Taylor Meade Performing Arts Center laughing at unexpected moments, Dr. Yong Zhao explained to more than 100 eager listeners what he thinks is wrong with American education — and what can be done at a local level to fix it.

Anya Doll, a parent in the Forest Grove School District, invited the University of Oregon professor to speak at the weeklong Vision in Education series, who presented a vision of education that focuses less on standardized testing and more on the kinds of people the system creates.

Illegal-immigrant high-school students, who signed up for the state's College Bound scholarship as a way of paying for college, are finding it and many other public and private scholarships out of their reach.

When she was in the eighth grade, the student — now a senior at Kent-Meridian High School — signed up for a state scholarship program the Legislature had just created.

The College Bound Scholarship program allows middle-school students from low-income households who maintain good grades, stay out of trouble and graduate from high school to receive a scholarship to a Washington college or university.

But there is a caveat that the Kent senior and possibly hundreds of others like her may have failed to take note of at the time. To obtain the scholarship they will also need to apply for federal financial aid. And to app

Our esteemed Governor, Andrew Cuomo, says he doesn't wish to get in the middle of a conflict between the UFT and the DOE. After all, why should he bother helping out the largest school district not only in the state, but also the country? If that darn Mayor Bloomberg thinks every principal's judgment is infallible, who is he to question? After all, Mayor Bloomberg has all that money, so he must know something.

And despite his reluctance to get involved, Governor Andy has no problempublicly blaming unions:

“Over the long term, we need to overhaul the system and change the law on the books,” he added. “The Assembly-led legislation in 2010 protected the teachers union at the expense of the students and instituted a system that was destined to fail.”

The District Staff has recommended to the Board a short-term capacity management plan for West Seattle that calls for a fleet of portables and a new option school located (at least at first) at Boren.

The community is calling for a new neighborhood school located in West Seattle, not an option school.

The staff says that they prefer an option school because they can see that they are going to have to change the attendance area boundaries, but they are going to do it next year, not this year, and they only want to do it once. All of these boundaries, they explain, are seriously interconnected.

BURLINGAME – The following statement was issued today by Dean E. Vogel, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, in response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s new state budget proposals:

“The governor’s 2012-13 state budget proposal makes it crystal clear that California cannot cut its way out of its ongoing budget deficit. Additional revenue is the only way to protect public education and the essential public services that all Californians count on every day, and that millions of our students deserve.

“Our schools and colleges have already been cut more than $20 billion in the last four years, and that doesn’t include the latest round of millions in midyear cuts to colleges, universities, and home-to-school transportation. We already rank 46th in per- pupil funding—additional cuts will not help us move in the right direction. This is another stark reminder that a state with the eighth-largest economy in the world

I loathe these people, including my alderman. Did you hear about the TIF figures at the very end? They could keep the libraries open, but their goal is to create a hatred for unions.
