Who is the teacher in this FSA photograph? Hard to say. But if she was a teacher without a union to support her (and many were during the Great Depression) I can tell you what she wasn’t: pregnant. If she had been the local school board would have canned her. She probably didn’t date too much either because that activity was also grounds for firing, and when

On Universities And Such, Or, If Obama’s A Kettle, Is Donald Trump Black?

Just about 40 seconds after (Yes, He’s Actually The) President Barack Obama brought forth his Certificate of Live Birth unto the world Donald Trump was accusing Obama of somehow sneaking his way into some University or another.

If Trump’s to be believed, Obama was a terrible student at a College, and then he somehow snuck his way into a University; after that he basically grifted his way into becoming the President of the Harvard Law Review.

Trump would tell you that he’s a hustler, that Obama is, and we’ve got to do whatever it takes to figure out what kind of semi-illegal shenanigans Obama’s University experience was all about.

But here’s the thing: Donald Trump has his own history of semi-illegal University shenanigans—and it appears

Confessions of an Urban Principal

by Frank Murphy

This book provides a first hand account of the life of an urban elementary school principal in the era of No Child Left Behind. On Monday and Wednesday, I post an installment of the current month’s chapter. The complete text for previous chapters can be found listed under Categories.

The names of all students and parents who are described in this story have been altered in order to protect their privacy.

The deluge of rain that was soaking the city this last Saturday was no mere April shower. It was a monumental storm that brought thoughts of Noah’s ark to mind. I wondered, who would come out on such a miserable weekend morning for a school meeting? I had wanted to pull my comforter up over my head and stay in bed for the whole day. But reluctantly I had dressed and headed off to North Philly. My stomach was knotted in apprehension.

My wife Mary Anne went with me to the church where the meeting was to be held. Her presence had insured that someone other than Reverend Moore, the pastor of the church, and myself were in attendance. The reverend has been helping me to organize the resistance to the district’s plan to shift the school’s managemen

Untapped Resource? Engaging Parents in the Learning Process

I attended a very interesting workshop discussing successful schools and the “Four Paths” that they take in leadership. As Ken Leithwood discusses these in “School Leaders’ Influences on Student Learning: The Four Paths”:

  1. The Rational Path – Based on the understanding of learning, teaching, and curriculum.
  2. The Emotional Path – The development of relationships and trust within our organizations.
  3. The Organizational Path – Structure, policies and procedures of our schools.
  4. The Family Path – The importance of parental engagement.

What I actually found interesting, but wasn’t surprised, was that the “Organizational Path” was listed as the

Teachers Who Threw Away Their Money

A question for the evening:

Suppose the company you worked for told you that if you went and got your MBA, you'd get a nice raise. Suppose that was the practice at your firm for years, and you signed a multi-year contract that spelled out the deal.

Suppose you OK'd the college and the program with your boss and your boss's boss. You went to night school and studied during your vacations and weekends and nights and you earned your degree. For the first year or two, you got the raise. Then a new CEO came in.

The CEO had heard of a few studies at a few other firms that showed that managers only got 'better' when their

Melissa chaired a hearing on the City Council’s Parks & Recreation Committee on Wednesday regarding the Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) program. The hearing focused on the disparities in the allocation of PEP officers among different parks and communities as well as workplace issues faced by the officers.

PEP officers are unarmed peace officers, who enforce the rules of our parks and are empowered to issue summonses for quality of life offenses, as well as disorderly conduct and unlawful possession of weapons. They

Temecula Valley chapters give Taste of Temecula Festival participants information about California’s State of Emergency

Thousand s of participants in the annual Taste of Temecula, Saturday, April 30, 2011, got a “taste” of California’s public education funding crisis along with their food and wine. Thanks to members from the Temecula Valley Education Association, the Murrietta Teachers Association, the Menifee Teachers Association and the Lake Elsinore Teachers Association who volunteered, passing out fliers, postcards and palm cards from a booth at the event in Old Town Temecula, citizens about California’s State of Emergency. They also promoted the San Diego and San Bernardino May 13 rallies, encouraging people stopping by the booth to attend one of the events to show this support for public education funding.

CTA members from the Temecula Valley Education Association and the Murrietta Teachers Association provide information about California's education funding crisis and the State of Emergency Week, May 9-13 at the Taste of Temecula Festival in Old Town Temecula, Saturday, April 30, 2011.

This video is mind-blowing. Students outraged over the proposed destruction of an ethnic studies program took over the board room, with some chaining themselves to the directors’ seats at the front of the room. While we adults– especially those who are squeamish about direct action and deep issues of race, class, and gender– figure out how we’re going to go about making education reform work, we should keep in mind that the students know exactly what’s up. They know when

To kill a mockingbird is a sin . . .

today is the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee being awarded the Pulitzer for her great novel. I am therefore reposting a diary from last year that addressed the book, in part as a result of a column by Kathleen Parker

To kill a mockingbird is a sin, Finch told his children, because it brings no harm to others. "They don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us," a neighbor further explained.

Likewise, trying to kill a great book because a 50-year-old literary character doesn't measure up to modern critics' idea of heroism is a sin. All Harper Lee ever did, after all, was sing her heart out for us.

So ends a column by Kathleen Parker with the title Revisionist fire at author Harper Lee should be dampened. It is written at least in part as a response to Malcolm Gladwell's criticism of the book, of Atticus Finch as insufficiently outraged or moved to action. Parker sees the point of literature as different. I find myself agreeing with Parker, with her muse in matters like this, Walker Percy. I want to explore the idea of how art moves us.

22 days left

in this my 65th year. As I did approaching 60, I am taking the time to stop and reflect - on my life to date, on where I may be headed, on the world around me, on my role therein. This is a personal meditation, but much of what appears on this site has that personal quality. So read or not, I don't mind.

Approaching 50 and approaching 60 I felt the momentum of the forthcoming birthdays. Half a century is a significant achievement in anything, and at 60 I became eligible for a variety of discounts, including being able to cut my weekly grocery bill by 5%. No, I am not a member of AARP, although literature from them is in the bill of offers of various Medicare plans that I have yet to find the time to wade through. And yes, I am already
