I recently discovered a very good article in the “Middle School Journal” that’s about three years old. It’s titled“What Research Says: Varieties of Parent Involvement In Schooling” and was written by Vincent A. Anfara, Jr. & Steven B. Mertens.

It gives a good overview of parent involvement research, but what makes this piece particularly unique is its discuss of historical patterns of family involvement in schools over the years.

It’s definitely worth reading.

A national organization that helped to set up charter schools in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina will help Detroit Public Schools in an unprecedented effort to convert as many as 45 schools to charter schools by fall.

Under an agreement announced today, the National Association of Charter School Authorizers will take on wide responsibilities for the DPS Renaissance 2012 initiative.

The organization will evaluate applications from charter schools organizations that wish to operate one or more of the schools and make recommendations to DPS by June. NACSA also will monitor the start-up activities of the approved providers.

In the table below, I present the results from the previous post, along with the public/private gap when educators are left out. The models control for work schedules (hours and weeks), state, gender, experience, and education. The details are in the table stub, if you’re interested.
The results show that excluding teachers and professors does mitigate the public/private earnings gap – reducing the “advantage” for private sector workers from 20.2 percent to 14.2 percent – but the difference remains large.
